I live in Texas and have friends who are teachers and administrators. Have plenty of friends who have kids in various school districts in the state. I have friends who are doctors and nurses. None of them I have spoken to want to see schools open back up again without a mask mandate. One of my doctor friends was telling me, they are nearly back up to the level at her hospital that they were when covid started.
I friggin' do not understand Abbott's stance on this AT ALL considering HE just put in the emergency call for additional medical care to be rushed to our state with quickly dwindling ICU beds and ambulances, doctors, and nurses already at a shortage. You are going to put a teacher in a class room who may not be vaccinated who is exposed to children who cannot get vaccinated, and put them in contact with other staff from the lunch staff, to janitors, to maintenance, to bus drivers, to other teachers who again, may not be vaxxed and just hope everything turns out okay?!? This isn't March 2020. You can't be this ignorant (cut to images of him telling us the power grid had no issue during the winter storm). This is August 2021 and Delta is killing and infecting people in our state at only a 45% fully vaxxed rate at a steady pace. Doctors are seeing more and more children getting infected.

The dominant strain of the virus in the US is now the Indian variant, making up an estimated 80% (I've seen wildly ranging figures from various sources, but that's about the average of the projections) of current cases here. Adopting a measure that didn't work because the virus is too contagious and not nearly lethal in order to combat a variant that's even more contagious and even less lethal is the kind of thing that, in saner times, would get you sent to the loony bin.
When the disease has spread to a dozen other species and the only prophylactic treatment is a gene therapy that doesn't provide sterilizing immunity, sticking your head in the sand and waiting for the disease to go away is NOT going to help. Children are essentially immune to Covid; we should be ENCOURAGING them to get infected, like we do with chicken pox. The pandemic will not end until herd immunity is reached, and that won't happen until enough people get infected and recover. This germ-phobia is not only crippling immune systems in general, but weakening the ability of those who've avoided it thus far to fight off Covid itself. The longer the pandemic goes on, the more people it's going to kill, and that's just the direct cases, paying no attention to the missed cancer screenings, the overdoses, the suicides, the social brain damage inflicted on small children who don't get to see people's faces, the economic damage from business restrictions... the list goes on.

Your title is misleading even though your opening paragraph implies you know what it really is. The governor banned schools from creating mask mandates; students and faculty can still freely mask up if they want.
There is nothing wrong with it. The reality is that the teachers union is out panhandling for influence again, and the Democrats are out to smear Abbott.
Teachers want to be able to mandate masks to keep themselves and the kids from getting COVID but the governor of the state is preventing that.
Seeing as the delta variant is affecting younger and younger people, and that schools are a place where social distancing is very hard, they are basically saying they want to kill the children, so, I guess depends on how you feel about that...

So the idea that schools can tell kids what to wear but not follow rules that protect the health of everybody is ridiculous. What happened to hands-off government? Parents are always free to homeschool.

Just because you say "that's been proven" doesn't make it so. As has been repeated and reported over and over a virus doesn't travel on its own it must attach to something. In the case of COVID it attaches to the water molecules that leave your lungs. The masks are enough to stop the transmissions of those water droplets that transport the virus. And experts don't claim that masks are 100% effective which is why MULTIPLE actions are required like social distancing. A single mask will reduce the likelihood by 26-79%. Two masks on different people double that. Keeping clean surfaces, etc. Add all those together and you have a much better system. But, masks ARE effective. Hospital staff treating COVID patients use them and don't get infected.
And to say that "masks are only a little effective so I won't wear them" is like a cop saying "body armor won't save my face so I won't wear it."
I think this has all become much to politicised. If you want to wear a mask, wear one, if you don't then don't, but everyone should be accepting of how other people feel or this situation will eventually turn to carnage!
The schools should have the right to require masks. However, if I was in charge, I would mandate vaccinations for all teachers and any adult that steps foot in the school. Kids wearing masks would be optional. :)

What KIND of masks do those reports claim are effective? The answer is: N95-rated masks, which is what hospitals are using. OK, fair enough.
But the vast overwhelming majority of people aren't able to buy N95 masks, because production is limited, and hospitals (correctly) get the priority. Consumers get the few that are left over, if any.
What these studies don't want to talk about is that the improvised masks that almost everyone is using are significantly less effective.
They are using the common tactic of saying something that is true without giving you the context that shows that the truth they are sharing isn't relevant to most people's reality. And if you bring that fact on big social media, they will "fact check" you or outright block you.
There are several recent reports from the CDC that don't support the government's COVID policies, and Facebook and Twitter block links to those reports even though the links are to the CDCs own website. Strange that some CDC reports are gospel and must be followed because the CDC are the experts, but other reports are "false" and can't even be discussed.
And Biden himself went on TV about 2 weeks ago and said that his administration was sending the big tech companies lists of things to censor, so this is coming from the White House. It's no coincidence that they block reports that go against their narrative.
