Voted No - and I say this as no fan of Mr. Biden and as one who believes that he made the correct decision, his execution of it has been massively botched. That said, the war in Afghanistan was begun for a legitimate purpose and degenerated into what amounts to armed social work. At that point it became unwinnable and a net liability on US foreign policy and strategic interests.

As a purely military exercise in the narrowest sense, the United States was victorious early on. The war having been launched to depose the Taliban government from power in Kabul. That position itself being relative as ever since the fall of the monarchy, what limited sense of cohesive national identity and central government authority had existed in Afghanistan had not really existed except by the imposition of force of arms.

Where things went awry was when the military action became a war of social engineering. An effort to transform Afghanistan from a tribal society overlaid by a limited theocracy into a modern democracy. That was always going to be beyond the power of the United States and it left the military in the hopeless position of being little more than a cork on an active volcano.

From that point on, it was only a matter of time until the US horror over 9/11 - a terrorist act planned and launched in Hamburg, Germany, in any case - subsided and the US grew war weary. At that point, the US began to withdraw and the nominally pro-Western authority that Washington was propping up in Kabul will now be left to its fate.

The final irony being that, in the long run, it is not apt to matter very much. As one wag has put it, "Afghanistan is a dagger pointed at the heart of Tajikistan." The British Empire fought three wars in Afghanistan. It lost the first one, one the next two and after all three withdrew, effectively restoring the status quo ante in the country itself. All to no ill effect for the British long term national interests.

It being the long term national interest that is the fundamental question as the international arena is the realm of Machiavelli and not Mother Teresa, of hard national interests and not moral principle. The advancement of moral principle - to the extent that it is advanced - riding on the back of the advancement of American national interest to the extent that the latter is ultimately compatible with the former.

"Good enough for government work." As Theodore Roosevelt said, "World peace comes not from human kindness or moral restraint, but from balanced power; equilibriums of force restraining the selfish aims of nation-states." So it will play out.

Indeed, if any moral question comes into immediately into play it is the question of how moral it is to ask young Americans to fight and suffer grave injuries and even death, all in the name of turning a hostile foreign society into something that there is no precedent for assuming that it will become. There is a certain nobility in that the United States went to war in a country in the name of self-defense and yet sought to leave it better than it was.

Noble, but ultimately foolhardy. America is having a hard time managing security in its own cities. To ask its citizens to go to a foreign land with no history of it and turn it into a thriving democracy was, and is, the height of absurdity.

Bottom line, the US secured its immediate purposes. Anything after that was a fantasy hopped up on hopeless Utopianism. Americans having yet to learn that in the international arena, it is sufficient to do well. Doing good in an imperfect world not likely ending well.

If Afghanistan becomes a base for international terrorism, vaporise it. That will send the necessary message. A competent US government would have developed the neutron bomb decades ago. The war in Afghanistan could have been over in a year, but the USA would not have the stomach to do what would be necessary to win. No Western liberal democracy would.

China has a serious problem with Taliban influence radicalising the Muslim population (the Uyghurs) of its western provinces. Now that the US has gone from Afghanistan, it will be only a matter of time (and it will not be a long time) until the People's Liberation Army invades Afghanistan. If the Chinese conclude that the only way to remove Islamic radicalism from Afghanistan is to exterminate the population, that is what they will do.

However, for political reasons, they did not want to do so. No US president, nor any ally wanted to annihilate the Taliban guerrillas. We tend to forget that the USA had 100,000 soldiers in Afghanistan in 2010
and that there have been no more than 16,000 at any point since 2014 (and usually far below 8,000 since then).
The United States role in Afghanistan has been specifically a support role for many years.
The Afghan Government/ANDSF handled their own security with USA aid (contractors, air support).
It was for all purposes an Afghan owned war.

THE ISSUE WAS
1. The complete corruption and ineptness of the Ghani Government. It is clear that many of the elites took advantage of the situation and lined their own pockets. This made it impossible for the ANDSF to fight in regions it was willing to fight (many cases of Governors selling cities to the Taliban, or telling the ANDSF to leave, or not being willing to send supplies).
Some ANDSF units were very brave (like the special forces), and would fight hard.
Lets not forget that over 60,000 Afghan soldiers died in this war. It was not that they were all cowards.
THERE was a great deal of ineptness, and corruption... that took what could have been a decent fighting machine into being a bloat worthless force.
THAT was a clear AFGHAN OWNED failure.

However
2. The Withdrawal from Afghanistan was poorly done. The process showed great callous towards the Afghans themselves, and cut much of the support to the ANDSF.
On top of this, it was poorly planned, and clearly showed a great deal of inaction by the Biden administration in securing American assets and our allies.
THIS was the American OWNED failure.

Had Biden better planned...
and also used USA military/diplomatic power.. its likely the Taliban would have been more serious in the peace talks.. On top of this, its likely the corruption of the Ghani regime would not have had some a profound influence.

More about how he did it than why. Worst execution possible, pretty much totally against what everyone including his own party's stooges were recommending. Not surprising considering even Obama ripped his former VP up and down and all around for being consistently the worst person to get advice on foreign policy from; I believe his exact words were "he was always wrong." A US withdrawal or attempted withdrawal was going to happen anyway. Trump had a plan in place too, though despite Biden's excuse making the plans were totally different, and this different plan was a breach of goodwill, which undoubtedly gave the Taliban a huge influx of sympathizers and recruits who immediately saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to eventually become a splatter on the side of a wall. The main difference was that it included very heavy-handed retaliation if the Taliban were to break terms, as well as the certainty that he'd follow through with it. Nobody on the world stage respects Joe's word or sees him as anything other than an exploitable resource. They didn't get along with Trump, but they knew he meant business. No doubt whats happening now would still happen anyway as soon as the next president came into office, though. People will argue that it needs to be done gradually, part of me disagrees. Nothing will change. If you leave 200 men out there as the last batch, the very same thing will happen. It's inevitable. The Afghan gov't cannot/did not unite the tribes. The Afghan gov't is probably corrupt. And they probably learned nothing because they thought they always have USA to lean on.
