The fallacy in the question is obvious. As the 18th century British statesman and political philosopher Edmund Burke said, "The principles of true politics are those of morality enlarged." The "stupid cultural war crap" is, in fact, a recognition that the moral and the cultural precede the political and that it defines the terms of the political debate.

Indeed, ironically, the those on the political "left" of the spectrum implicitly recognize this fact. Thus was "political correctness" and "woke culture" born. A crude attempt to define the culture in terms of moral imperatives through an appropriation of the language.

In fact, the moral/cultural discussion cuts to the fundamentals of the political debate. Abortion is an obvious moral debate. Is freedom a means to an end or is it an end in itself. The welfare state is a less obvious, but equally "moral/cultural" question. Defining the obligation of the citizen to his fellows and the limits of those obligations.

These things, and much else, define the parameters of the political debate and the irony is that the attribution of "stupidity" to such questions is in fact what leads to the shrillness of the American political debate - indeed to the question's tone itself. The failure to recognize the moral/cultural dimension to the political discussion leads to attributions of insincerity and condescension. The questioner failing to recognize that he is a prisoner of the argument that he is making.

"Stupidity" is a characterization defining a quality. It is not a quality in and of itself. The questioner has made - crudely and while lacking awareness - a cultural point. Defining and characterizing those he disagrees with not on the merits of the case-by-case arguments, but in general moral terms.

Indeed, in one case, the questioner, who may presume himself intellectually and morally superior, strikes a deeply inhumane pose. He points to the episode of Mr. Biden at the recent reception ceremony for the dead in Afghanistan as beside the point. The families of the dead, implicit in the question, is the idea that these are mere raw material whose feelings are inconsequential and that the President's role a Head of State - that is in his symbolic and ceremonial duties - is inconsequential.

To be sure, American politics has more emotion and less intellectual content than is perhaps good for it. However, if American war dead and their families do not merit the respect of the Commander-in-Chief, even if inwardly he does not feel such respect, then the society is apt to see many more war dead to come. Thus does a personal failing of the President suggest deeper political ramifications, not least because as Head of State, it is the job of the President to treat the life and death of his citizens as of some greater consequence.

Indeed, even something as simple as respect for the flag has deeper ramifications. As Burke also said, "A nation is more than a mere thing of physical locality." It is, rather, a thing of the mind and if respect for its symbols and institutions is denigrated, then it is reasonable to assume that respect for the nation is in decline. Further, that the habit of denigrating those symbols suggests that it will decline still further, with not good consequences to follow - particularly as respect for the rule of a nation's laws will decline as respect for the nation declines.

Human beings, as Aristotle pointed out, are distinct from all other animals in creation in that they alone respond to symbols and attribute meaning to them. To denigrate such things then is to blur the distinction between human and animal. Maintaining, even if sometimes crudely expressed, that distinction is what the "cultural warriors" of the "right" and the "politically correct woke" of the "left" are rightly preoccupied with.

Thus, the questioner exists in an intellectual hall of mirrors. He is either arguing, without being aware of it, for a cultural position - in which case he refutes his own premise - or he is a prisoner of ideas he does not understand.

If we were, we'd improve our rail networks where they're viable, repair roads, build new ones where necessary and improve our public transportation where it's viable as well as improving broadband speeds to rival South Korea and Singapore, and really respect our skilled tradespeople. And improve our math and science education (especially math).

I'd say the future of Social Security and Medicare, immigration/citizenship law, energy policy, the state of the nuclear family, civil liberties, crime, what to do with the many people who have criminal records but have a hard time finding employment, pride in our country and its symbols are the big issues, but issues like trans people participating in women's sports, while less significant in my opinion, aren't insignificant.
