Not gossip. My country is french-speaking. Rare are those who speak English fluently. When a childhood friend - who also speak English- visited a few years ago, we went out to a club. She and i had spent more years speaking English than french and were both more comfortable with English. We parked the car and chatted a bit - in English - as we were walking to the entrance of the club. Some guy came over trying to hit on us, we ignored him. Then he began badmouthing us in french. We quickly responded in french.
Lol yes, these Caribbean hair dressers were speaking Spanish and they were shit talking me. It didn’t make sense cause they were older women, they were basically making fun of my skin and saying how I think I’m all that because I’m light skin. I just ignored them cause it didn’t make sense to me they’d say that when their children are biracial and my exact complexion so it’s kind of like in a weird way they’re dissing their kids

I wouldn’t say jealousy. More like internalized colorism since Carribean cultures have a lot of that but yeah, it was pretty low for them to come for a kid
kind of, though not really. German tourists came asking in English how to get to a certain bus stop. Except the station has like 5 different stops in different streets and there are no street signs, so I didn't know. Then the guy turned to his wife and said in german: "He doesn't know either. Nobody knows here. How do they get around?" I only smiled and left. I happen to speak czech, English and german fluently, currently working on polish. At that point I will have all neighboring countries covered.
Also an interesting thing happened when an old german lady at a supermarket was trying to buy credit for her phone (I had no idea that still exists until then) and a device was rejecting her number. A random other woman turned to me and asked If I know the phone code of country code as that could be the reason and she said she speaks german to explain that to her. She was clearly surprised I did actually know the code, because in my experience most people don't even know how country codes work, let alone know all of the correct ones for surrounding countries by heart :-D
Yes, I was at Walmart and was waiting for my ride I was sitting on the bench so this lady comes to sit down this lady was Mexican and I moved down on this bench to give her and her kids a place to sit down well she looked at me very mean and spoke to her kids in Spanish ( my guess) to her kids and in no time her ride came and she took her kids but this hurts to think people can be this low to do these things but it happens in real life they do not care
Yes it happened with me once. When I joined my new school I wasn't speaking much in my hometown language as I'm not much fluent in that. So once when I was there with my parents in restaurant I saw my classmates (they were friends) also there and I heard them badmouthing me (in hometown language). It kind of hurted me but who cares.
The world is a crazy place with a lot of bad mannered people. Sorry that you had to go through this. The best advice would be to not care what people think. Have the confidence to feel that way and you won't be hurt by this.
A story: a former firend was on the bus and she was with a friend of hers who was black and italian. This friend understood italian.
Anyway, while on the bus, some older Italian women started insulting the mixed race girl using racial slurs and saying her private parts probably stink (likely jealous because black and italian mixed girls are mad sexy).

OMG Yes!!! My husband speaks 7 languages and I understand (not speak well) 3 of those. His sister in-law was complaining about me to my father in-law in their native tongue and I butted in. She switched to a language I don't understand. I have surprised quite a few people, but since I'm terrible at speaking in those languages I just respond in English.
Yeah hispanic ladies are fucking annoying sometimes with their gossiping not all but a lot and it really annoys me that my family members would be calling other girls chubby when they look like balloons I just really don’t like women that do that and are judgmental
I speak 6 languages, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to hear that this has happened to me more than once. Most of the time, I just laugh it off but sometimes I approach them speaking the same language acting as if I didn’t hear them or I talk really loud in the same language just cause I like to see the embarrassed look on their face
Not in a language I can understand - I only speak Arabic besides English and I guess I look quite Arab lol. But in other languages yes and although I can’t understand what they’re saying it’s very clear that they’re talking about me.
I stay in Cape Town we have 11 official languages I speak 8 out of those and other languages. So yeah it's rather shitty. As people assume you wouldn't understand their language.
Yes I do. I often get a lot of patients come into the day clinic speaking my language. I don’t say anything in my language unless the surgeon says that i can speak the language too.
Most of the time they complain about how expensive the surgeon charges and nothing about my co workers. Trust me though. i would say something back if they were to talk shit about my co workers.
I can understand Spanish but not too good at speaking it. But i had that happen to me once and was able to reply enough that they knew i was aware of what they were saying. They weren’t bad mouthing me so we all got a good laugh out of it
That was close to 10 years ago they rent a place i own that is a couple doors down from my house. Whenever i meet a friend or family member of theirs they joke to be careful what they say. Its a joke that never gets old. 😂😂😂
Nah i have once heard a girl talk in my language on the phone and she said i will tell u smth so embarrassing i hope no one ever hears this and she spilled tea and secrets and i sneakily heard lmao when she was done i spoke with our language and she wanted to disappear lol
i speak cantonese and most people can’t tell cause i’m half chinese half white. and this lady next to me was saying i was pretty but i looked dumb and that i would be a waste of rice. (it makes more sense in canto i’m just bad at translating phrases lol)
Never about me but I’ve enjoyed listening in on others conversations when they don’t know I spoke their language. However it’s happened that I was talking to a buddy of mine about a girl in Romanian and she happened to be Romanian too, she came up to me after and told me, I was so embarrassed, but I was saying how hot she was so at least it wasn’t bad. I speak 4 languages :)
My friend had that happen when a stranger talked to her on the bus and his friend asked him what sexual acts he wanted to do with her in their language, she understood and was angry.
I can speak three languages very well, and one language a little broken. I can speak Tamil, Telugu and English fluently, and a bit of broken German lol

It isn't shameful at all. I'm also fluent in English and Hindi only and I am criticized for not being habituated to speak in my home town language. You are lucky you didn't need to know 3-5 languages. Anyway if you know English then you can communicate with any person around the world so it is not a issue. Nothing shameful I see over here.
Something to keep in mind oversees. Especially living in countries where there are a lot of Afrikaans speaking Saffas. Only happened once where someone heard us speaking Afrikaans and we all laughed.
