Brittney Cooper, a tenured professor at New Jersey's Rutgers university, is facing backlash after making a series of comments disparaging white people. She made headlines earlier this month after she proudly proclaimed that White people are an inconvenience and that 'we got to take white people out' in an online discussion with The Root's Michael Harriot. Now, this is funny: “And it’s like, no, that’s what white humans did. White human beings thought, ‘there’s a world here and we own it.’ Prior to them, black and brown people have been sailing across oceans, interacting with each other, for centuries without total subjugation, domination, and colonialism." How can a University Professor espouse such diatribe and blatantly inaccurate nonsense? Her ignorance is astounding! She's a shining example of how affirmative action and diversity quotas should never be considered for employment in academia (or anywhere else). We should be living in a concrete meritocracy!

She seems to be speaking from a place of pain (not, of course, that it makes what she said okay). What has happened in her life for her to feel this way? I understand feeling offense at her opinion, but would it not be better to respond to her with kindness and sympathy, instead of derision? Being aggressive and violent does nothing but prove her point, and make her feel further justified in her opinion. Trying to connect with her as a human being, and showing her grace, would make it easier for her to see that her views are harmful and wrong. I look at people like this with nothing but pity. How sad and full of hatred has her life been, for her to take it out on an entire group of innocent people who she does not know?
