People need to understand that law enforcement HAS been GETTING BETTER as time goes on. It’s just that, today, we have technology that can record incidents, partially, then, have these partially recorded incidents posted online with inflammatory words like “Racist WHITE cop,” “unarmed black man,” “trigger happy cop,” etc.
Then, a bunch of SHEEP people write hashtags and click LIKE because they already hate cops and don’t even know the facts of the incident.
So, to them, it’s automatic CONFIRMATION BIAS

Yes, at the moment, the passion for de-funding the police does seem to be fading. That is not too surprising, but then again, the nation has been up and down this path before.
It being generally forgotten that the nation experienced an upsurge in crime in the 1960s and 70s, a time when police were routinely referred to as "pigs." When accusations of police brutality and the like were almost routine, and when it came into vogue the idea that the criminal was not a threat to society, but rather a victim of society's failings. Thus setting up a fashionable passion for rehabilitation and penal reform.
Indeed, even tracing back further in time, the United States reacted to the collapse of Edwardian moral values at the end of World War I, the Spanish Influenza pandemic and the "Forgotten Depression" with the ballyhoo years of the 1920s. Generally a period of peace and prosperity, but also a massive explosion in crime, particularly organized crime in response to Prohibition. It may seem quaint in retrospect, but at the time the disrespect for the law and law enforcement was highly controversial.
Then came the 1930s, 40s and early 50s with the Great Depression, World War II, the post-war labor tumults and then the Korean War. By the time the latter ended the nation was desperate for normality and stability and thus arose a culture of tradition and respect for institutions and authority. Law enforcement was honored and crime rates fell to their lowest levels since record keeping on such matters began.
However, stability and prosperity came to be taken as the norm and taken for granted. The fear of conformity - "do your own thing" - became the norm. Society, far from affording stability, was seen as oppressive and the criminal a victim. Thus leading to the aforementioned crime spike of the 1960s and 70s. Such that a Gallup poll in 1978 found that 77% of ALL women - irrespective of race, color, religion, income level, etc. - reported that they did not feel safe walking alone in their neighborhoods at night.
Beginning in the 1980s a backlash set in. A crackdown on crime and drugs began and after a lag - such policies were not apt to have an immediate effect - crime rates fell by the early 2000s to levels not seen since the placid peaceful 1950s.
Suffice to say, as was said of the French kings may be said of society generally. "They forget nothing, they learn nothing." Drug legalization has become the passion. The criminal is again seen as the victim and thus the police as the oppressors. Perhaps not broadly, but in media, thought leaders, academia and among policymakers with the public, if not always agreeing, at least passively accepting and sometimes even electing such figures. The costs in blood and treasure - as in the 1970s - are beginning to rise and once again the culture is starting to have second thoughts. The wheel turns again and - having forgotten the lessons of the past and repeated the errors of the past - the culture is slowly but surely returning a harsher view of criminal behavior. The price of re-learning the lessons of the past being paid in blood and treasure.
Suffice to say, the nation has been here and will be again - and again, and again.
I feel the defund the police narrative was enforced and reached attention a lot via use of social media and the vocal mi ority having more voice. I believe that most people who look at this with common sense understand that without police there is no law and order and it essentially becomes the lawless wild west or dystopian levels of crime and violence.
Now while I believe the police don't need a good chunk of the things they have, they need the funding to get training necessary to deal with certain situations and to have a standard to be trained to. When your departments are on a budget it has to be allocated to retention, training and recruiting and that money evaporates quickly in some areas and that is when there are shortcomings, namely training.
My little sister is LEO and the toll it took on her last year with all of these whiney, entitled brats that protested them, caused riots and destroyed businesses to go on top of some of own family members taking to social media joining in on the narrative really hurt her. She didn't feel supported by her community, she felt isolated and rejected by her aunts and cousins, and most of the support came from people who were close to her, namely me, our parents, her husband, amd some close friends. We had to let her know frequently that she was supported by a silent majority and that the loudest people she was hearing were the ones in the minority.
It is easy for a lot of people to play backseat quarterback when they haven't done one day in the shoes of these officers, and honestly, most couldn't do it. They only see the bad or rare cases that make it to the public and ignore the good that these people do. Now, I am not denying that there are bad cops. There are, but they are few and far in between and it's because of them that the good cops have to put up with a lot of the bullshit that they do from their community and the mainstream media.
If we hold officers accountable, let's hold the chiefs accountable as well. The mayors and the governors. If the cops need a standard it starts at the top and trickles down in terms of your established chain of command. Bad command, bad department. Bad department, poor handling. Poor handling, hello mainstream media primetime.
This level of outcry from a political side is not only damaging, but ridiculous. Honestly, it doesn't help when these people never learn. The cities they want these policies in go to hell in a handbasket and they wonder why it suddenly gets bad? Worst case scenario, they move out of those areas where they put the local government in power to put these policies into play that creates these horrible living communities and vote to have these policies in their new area. It is a cancer.
People need to think critically and there is a severe lacking in it these days. Think critically. And just as important- fucking listen actively and do not pay attention to the party letter by someone's name. Listen to their policies, observe your potential leadership, look at what they have done or accomplished before voting for them. Otherwise, you live in whatever the hell you created and hopefully you learn from your decisions and it doesn't take a traumatic event for one to see clearly.
The term “defunding” was just a political catchphrase meant to please certain voters when tensions were high. Cities around the country, however, are reforming how they police, which is probably long overdue. The reform movement is far from dead and some of the changes being implemented are worthwhile but all of it requires funding. I don’t think most of the people screaming “defund the police” really believed they could just eliminate police departments. I think the whole thing was designed to force reforms and it has resulted in internal changes to policing, as well as criminal justice reforms through state legislation. To that end, the movement has been effective but actual defunding was never really a realistic plan.
I think those who were serious about “defunding the police” were just a very small, yet vocal minority. Any serious person who lives in a civilized society recognizes the police is needed, and so the “they want to defund the police!” blew up from a wish from a small minority to a political talking point.
I don’t think Defund the police “movement” is dying out because it never truly existed.
I’m sure the entire idea was to drive good police that believe in protecting your constitutional and human rights out of the force and then once they were purged, they want to up the funding to hire their corrupt communist buddies… That’s generally how authoritarians work. In blue cities, the police will be even more corrupt and malignant than they ever were now and it will be the fault of the BLM and ANTIFA. Meanwhile the constitutional loyalist that lost their position for wanting to protect citizens rather than stand down or refused to enforce medical tyranny will have taken bonus deals to move to Florida to do good policing.
For the life of me, I don''t see how a boneheaded plan such as this actually attracted supporters living on planet Earth - eliminate the agency whose main purpose is to stand between a city's citizens and its criminal element. And then... what?
What did the idiots supporting this think was gonna happen? I didn't hear too many solutions for it that didn't parade around like absurdity served a plate. Soooo, criminals luck into this one-in-a-lifetime disaster period in history where they're basically handed across-the-board, almost off-the-chart opportunities and... job fairs see huge rises in attendance? The term defund the police was terrible. It should have been reform the police. We need law enforcement and like any organization reform should always be on the table. This allows to continue doing the good things and make necessary changes when things go wrong.
In any organization when someone does something really wrong they get fired but with law enforcement when something goes really wrong it's death.
That said, I'm so thankful we have people that want to serve and protect because this is not like any other normal job. I do believe social media allows everything to be exposed, and I think it's good. Bad police officers need to be handled like any bad employee of a company and no one should be above the law. I just wish they'd televise and post all the great things they do as well.

Good. Anyone whose line of thought runs "We have too many people getting shot, so we should get rid of the police" needs a few more runs through history class. Likewise "this governmental organization/institution has some serious internal problems, so we should give them less money until they solve them".
The idea was never less police, but better police (and taking money away from weapons of war for the police and putting it into social programs, so that society wouldn't have to pay huge amounts to imprison people, when they could be educated instead).

I don't think so. People saw the police being provided with military equipment, and saw them behaving badly, especially towards minorities. Should that be rewarded with more money?
It was just a luxury belief in the first place, it was a way of virtue signalling more than a legitimate movement because if you really think about it it’s totally counterproductive to any sort of civil rights movement.
Though the frustration over police discrimination towards people of colour, especially African Americans and native Americans is totally real and still very present in effected communities.

The movement to defund the police is a favorite of the elite. Why? I suspect those who are in power would like to replace local police forces with a centralized, federal-controlled police force. The academics, talking heads, BLM, and managerial-class leftists who advocate for it are just useful idiots.
It's fading because people are beginning to realize that, when there is no one to protect them from criminals and crimes, there is more crime. People do not like their things being stolen and their family being killed.
I'm all for defunding the police however with regards to that I don't like Municipal Police but the sheriff on the other hand is an elected official I say the money you take from the Municipal Police should be given to the Sheriff's Department because that's how the law was supposed to be enforced through the sheriff not through hired thugs from a municipality that most of the time act as Revenue collectors.
Not surprised, those in city governments that thought 'de-funding the police' was a good idea until the crime rates shot through the roof with not enough police officers to answer calls due to those same city governments cutting the number of officers on staff and officers resigning and going to other police departments that are paying a sign on bonus to recruit officers.

I try to avoid it but when things happen like Trump tries to end democracy in the US but also enjoys 70% approval among republicans, that's not the fringe. That's a staggerig majority who is okay with ending democracy in the US. And that's pretty much my only real criticism of the right.

In any case, it is necissarily false equivalence to compare it to anything democrats approve of by 70% or more, as none of it includes trying to violently overthrow democracy. There's an enormous effort to downplay the 1/6 riot and I can understand people are gullible, which could give people a pass for many things collectively agreed to, but being gullible is no excuse for opting to dismiss a violent coup as irrelevant. It is the defining characteristic of Donald Trump - he tried to end the country to hold on to power. After years everyone telling the left we were seeing subtext where there was none and being paranoid, it actually happened. Yes. Several dozen big cities around the country cut major funds from their police departments and laid off lots of cops. NYC alone cut $1B from their police budget. In a shocking surprise, crime skyrocketed, people freaked, and NYC is now frantically trying to hire police again. Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Madison, and other cities all did this, and have all since reversed it - and in the end, it's cost the taxpayers in those cities a ton of money (it costs a lot more to fire, recruit, and train than it does to retain specialized employees), and that's not counting all of the costs of the crime itself.
People call the police because they need some documentation for insurance. So they're basically just helping Jake from State Farm, not being a cop or fighting crime.
You want to talk real talk? Cops were on scene for the Parkland Massacre. They stood back and let the killing go on while unarmed teenagers were getting slaughtered. They were also on scene for the Las Vegas Massacre and stood back and let the killing go on.
Would you like pictures from the 2016 election season where cops were standing back and watching people get beat down in the streets for wearing the wrong candidate's logo? Perhaps you'd like video from innumerable riots where police stand back and let thugs attack people, drag them out of cars and beat them? Political right and left can basically interpret these events however they want to SERVE their gains.
These incidents serve as election fodder unfortunately.
You, for example, will interpret these things differently than what someone of the reverse side will.
You can try to spin it however you want. But the Parkland Massacre literally had a cop on site who then hid instead of trying to save lives. More cops showed up and hid like useless cowards. A second department finally showed up and actually went in. And at the Las Vegas Massacre, police arrived quickly to the scene, and then refused to take any action.
Police are great at take your statement for insurance after a burglary or car accident. But the real facts show that if lives are on the line, police are happy to wait outside while people get slaughtered.
The simple fact is that if your family member was at the site of a mass shooting, it wouldn't matter how quickly police got there or if they were already there when the shooting started. The police are not going to protect you or save you from danger. You can try to lamely justify it, but reality is reality.
