I think police should be repurposed to stopping crime instead of participating in highway robbery to fund themselves. This is partially our fault but it is mostly theirs. I understand it's easy to get jaded when you join the force and then all the crime you wanted to fight turns out to be extremely rare and its pretty much impossible to be at the scene when it happens, but that's no excuse to give up trying. They know where crimes are most likely to occur. They just aren't the sort of crimes they really care about stopping, like white supremacists ganging up on a trans person or something. But if they made that a priority - undercover work to know when organized hate crimes are going to happen and then showed up in force to stop them.

They are in a unique position where everyone expects them to be far right, anyway, so no one would bat an eye if they joined an alt right militia to gather Intel. What a way to show they aren't alt right and worth every penny of all the funding we could throw at them. But they don't do that..

i also am ignorant to this, but what are the qualifications of a police officer? and don't they get promoted without any special training and really aren't that bright of people?

What about more funding for better training. The U. S has like 1/8th the required training time compared to germany and less than 1/10 compared to that of finnland just to name a few examples.

No wonder that there is more police brutality if nearly everyone can get in. Police has a purpose. Instead of defunding how about actually working to make that purpose a real thing? Instead of no guns how about making them the only ones with guns so them having one actually makes sense.

Also before anyone says the typical:" dont give power to authorities and dont take our guns thats how you get dictators!". Normally it works the other way around and recent history showed it well again. Its a minority of armed people that try to take power from a legit Government not the other way around. Also you are the people shouting freedom left and right. We all know thats wish-thinking but guns dont make it real. Real democracy would make it real.
