not everyone, some do, but it seems that very few manage to get clean and stay clean.
I see the results firsthand of the effects of what being addicted can do to you. It isn't pretty.
We have 1 frequent flyer in town that we have brought back 15 times from an overdose. Now she is having other medical issues when we bring her back and it is getting worse. Someday her body will have had enough, and there won't be anything else we can do for her.
One day her luck will run out.
Other are the same way, it doesn't seem to matter what happens to them, how may time we are pumping their chest, bagging them, only to have them deny that they took anything even with the needle still stuck in their arm!
I would love to drive slower to those calls, but we are not God, it isn't our decision to make, so we do what we do and hope they will finally see the light and straighten out, but knowing deep inside that you will be back, again.
Their body's drive for the drug overpowers everything else, they will lose everything, and possibly their lives but they don't care, they are just living for the next fix, then the next one until one day it is too late.
    It is very sad.
They were once someone's baby, their parents were so proud when they brought them home from the hospital, did their homework together, played sports together until 1 day when their child made the worst decision of their lives.
Then the PD has to make that call, Mrs. Smith... and most times it isn't a big surprise, but it still is a very hard thing to do is to go talk to the parents.
I had to do that on Mother's day 2 years ago.
Tell his mother that her son had passed, that we did everything we could possibly do, and it just wasn't enough. It just wasn't enough.

No. Most don't ruin their lives, but it's usually a negative. Most people quit before it does too much damage.

The danger with drugs is that it's tossing the dice. People are taking a risk that MIGHT have very serious consequences. Whenever you look at risk, you have to look at both sides. How much risk is there? And what are the consequences? If the risk is high, but the consequences are minimal, then it won't hurt too much if it goes bad. But if the consequences are extremely high, then it's not worth taking the risk.

With drugs, yes they can completely ruin a person's life, or even kill them. In some cases it might even be better if it had killed them, because their life can become pure hell. Doing drugs is playing with fire. It might not burn you, but it's not really worth taking the chance.

There is a very good reason why most people who are experienced with drugs quit doing them. They know the downside and feel that it's not worth it. Unfortunately so many drug users won't admit to the negatives. They think it isn't harming them, even when it is. But most drug users do eventually figure it out and quit.

If you are referring to illegal drugs, generally yeah but not always.

If they do more than a one-off, yeah... those that get addicted often ruin their lives. Girls sell their souls and body for the next hit, with no regard to pregnancy, STDs, or violence. Guys often steal, pawn, rob people, whatever to pay for the next hit.

I have only tried one illegal drug once, and won't do any ever again. The rest I stick to are all legal but even those in extreme can ruin someone's life.

Nope, some people are really good at hiding it and somehow keep their jobs in the process... but for how long, I don't know.
Most people aren't so lucky though. Lots of accidental overdoses, etc.
It's just not worth it. Better to find another coping mechanism.

It strongly depends on the mental health of the person taking them, and the reason you are taking them. you should never take and illicit drug to fill happiness in your life, but if you are a happy person and have no problem controlling your self you might be OK, I've used various drugs off an on for a long time and have no problem quitting. i do always smoke marijuana, but i don't believe it to be a drug. also i understand this question is most likely talking about illegal, lets not forget that Alcohol is classified as a Drug and it and prescribed drugs have ruined way more lives then recreational use

Nope, it’s far to generalising to say people do.

Nicotine is a stimulant drug, smokers have for decades smoked and held high power successful jobs.

Alcohol is also a drug and same as with nicotine.

then going in to other drugs, it’s about moderation, some have used cannabis for years and hold down very high power jobs.

as with anything, once it becomes or is heading to become an addiction, your life starts to suffer. The smoker who spends cash on cigarettes rather than other necessities, same with drinkers etc.

If addiction goes unaddressed, it definitely has the potential to ruin the life of the addict and those who care about him. I was addicted to pain meds. I got help in 2012 and haven’t looked back since. But it took a lot of love and support from my friends and family.
So short answer is not necessarily. But it takes lots of support and help and love from friends and family. And addiction is different from chemical dependency. You can detox, but you need to learn how to combat the addiction and for that you’ll need professional help and support groups. The one I recommend is AA since they have the most experience in helping each other stay sober.
if your addict has not detoxed yet, you may want to go to a doctor to taper him or her off the drugs so that the withdrawal symptoms are tolerable. Then have your addict go to a 12 step support program to stay sober.
best of luck to you. I know as one who fought the addiction it’s hard to beat it, but definitely not impossible.

Only if they keep it up. I partied like a Viking in the early 70s and tried various pills and coke when I was in high school and for a couple years after I graduated. Psychedelics were interesting. I never stuck any pins in my arms or tried heroin. And I never came close to using anything but weed habitually. I never became a druggie.
I wound up with great job that turned into a career, even when I was still smoking weed. Everything worked out.

No there is quite a lot of functional drug users. While one could argue it still a negative impact on there life sure but ruin it? Nah. Then there is many who just do drugs for a party, or something else but not addicted.

If drugs ruin everyone's life that would mean every person who drinks alcohol will become a abusive alcoholic not really how it works, that's more or less the same with all types of drugs. With of course other's have higher chances at been worse.

What depends on a few factors 1 is what is the drug + 2 is the legal status in the drug. You have plenty of people that are addicted to prescription drugs but they have a steady supply and maybe insurance or it's not expensive and it doesn't affect them it's when you make drugs illegal and you drive up the prices and that's when it starts to ruin people

    Illicit drugs? ALWAYS.
From experience, I used methamphetamine for nearly 20 years and it pretty much made my life miserable... never at the beginning cause I was always a functioning addict.
Heroin however is a drug that can and will most likely kill you.

I wouldn't wish addiction to my worse enemy, and thAt says a lot

No but enough do that it should persuade people not to try drugs because so, so many end up addicted and do destroy their lives... many dying. Just staying away from that stuff is the smartest road to take.

Not everyone but many do. Ask any local sheriff who manages a county jail. They will all tell you that 90% of people locked up are there because of drugs. They will also tell you that 90%of heroin addicts started smoking pot.

I would say no. There are many who have shown the ability to come back from drug addiction and become successful. But considering your other question I saw, you might want to ask yourself if it's a dealbreaker.

No, it's a combination of war on drugs and a broken criminal justice system. Many addicts what to get help but do not do so out of fear of being labeled a criminal and thrown in jail. The number of drug addicts would greatly be reduced if we legalized all drugs and made access to help easily accessible, but that will never happen, privet prisons gotta stay full so they maximize profits.
