No, in fact he was VERY deserving. He sought legal redress for defamation. By definition, in law, such compensation "makes him whole." It is not a "bonus," it is rather a restoration and in that it was fully deserved.
The question is partly right, the young man merely smirked. That is the point. The mass media took that smirk and extrapolated from it an intent with absolutely no basis in the facts of the case. Thus opening up the young man to a public shaming that was in no way justified and left un-redressed would have very likely had implications for his future - college admissions, jobs, etc.
Indeed, it is hard to imagine a more odious episode. Grown adults - alleged professionals - piled onto a 16 year old boy. Responding not to the facts that they did not bother to investigate, but to little more than visual stimulus. This was the conduct not of adult professionals, but of baying hyenas.
It was, quite frankly, an outrage. The Covington boy, in fact, acted with more maturity and restraint than any of his allegedly adult critics. That "smirk" was in fact, as he described it at the time, his attempt to defuse what he thought was a bad situation.
The boy was trying to calm the "Native American" gentleman and show him that he meant no harm. It being recalled, again, that no on the media bothered to look into how the situation had developed and that, in fact, the "Native American" gentleman was the aggressor.
Perish the thought that allegedly grown adults should bother to look beyond mere appearances. Of course it makes perfect sense to throw 16 year old boys to the baying wolves.
Nope. Mr. Sandman - he is 18 now - deserved all the compensation he got and then some. Both to - as the legal term has it - make him whole. (How, after all, does one restore one's reputation when it has been slandered across the media?) Also, because it will hopefully serve as a deterrent to a media of alleged adults and professionals that they are expected to meet and live by a professional standard and when they don't the price - at least in economic terms - will be brutal.
The sanctimony of the culture - its' smug self-assuredness of its own virtue and its complacency needed to be hit and hit hard. Life is about the facts and not about the narrative and most of all, it is best that we judge 16 year old boys with some care. They have long lived ahead of them and it is obscenely unjust to consign them to infamy just so that alleged adults can be assured of their presumed virtue. A presumption inversely proportional to the facts.
He smirked trying to keep his composure at the utter insanity that was going on. And the fact that he was being heckled by an insane activist who merely hid behind a Native identity as a shield - like a coward. He was harangued merely for wearing a hat, by Tide Pod eaters of every imaginable stripe.
And then, CNN and the like went out of their way to paint him as the KKK, Aryan Nation, and other violent and detestable groups all rolled into one... for simply standing there and saying: "Are you serious?"
This kid was the victim, from the first second onward. And then, the lame-stream committed themselves to months of mental gymnastics to portray his situation as the exact opposite of what was really going on, in an act of blood libel that goes far beyond what any sane human being in a position of power would do. Proving that partisan politics had driven these hacks utterly mad!
For all this gaslighting, and for all this harassment and libel, Nick became entitled to every single penny. If only he could've also bankrupted the Kochs, Soroses, Bilderbergers, Cedes, and everyone else involved in the globalist big boys club that you know full well was bailing out these networks that screwed themselves over!
Literally, nothing about his story was newsworthy. And nothing about his wearing a hat justified those ghouls coming after him in the first place!
All they had to do to make him go away... was to ignore him and say nothing from the beginning!

Watch the footage again- and the whole video, not just what the news cut out to make him look bad. He (gently) restrained one of his fellow Covington students from physically confronting a guy who was hassling them, probably preventing a fistfight and possibly a massed brawl. Pay special attention to Sandmann's teeth, too- notice the extended canines, and try to imagine what those would do to your lips if you tried to make a disarming smile. It would very much come across as a smirk.
More to the point, however, he didn't sue them because he smirked at them; he sued them because they stirred up a borderline lynch mob against him. Think back to the social media furor around the incident, lead entirely by people with an incorrect idea of what happened. That's the mindset that leads to witch trials and starts pogroms. Regardless of your feelings about Trump, it's a DAMN good thing the defamers got slapped down, and slapped HARD. They obliterated his reputation and damaged many of his future prospects for decades to come- he completely deserved compensation for that, and if you look past the politics of the moment, you'll agree.

Like it or not, the media made Nick Sandmann.
