Why? What's the difference? At least Oriental is better than calling them a chink or a Jap.
Changing oriental to Asian is one of the more stupid politically correct changes. There was nothing derogatory about oriental. But apparently some people thought there was. So they changed it to Asian to represent about 10-20% of Asia.
I’ve never heard of the word before but I guess it is just old fashioned by the sound of it.
As long as no malice was intended, no offense should be taken
That's what Asian people were called when I was a kid too. (In the 70s) It certainly wasn't meant to be offensive, but I guess it is.
refer to my 1970's board game
No, it isn’t. It’s quite the common knowledge that when people say Asian, what comes into their mind is East Asia while forgetting that ain’t only the only part
Not racist, just outdated and inaccurate. But so is the term "Asians".
Not at all. Only ignorant people who do not know any better and have hardly traveled think calling Asians Orientals is racist.
It depends, if they are from the Oriental region of Asia, no; but if they aren't, then it is.
I’m Asian and indifferent. Other people tell me that it’s offensive but I don’t feel offended upon hearing it.
To my eyes there's enough difference in physical appearance between an Indian and a Chinese to put them in. different groups. I think its racist not to.
Dang dude what a question. You got almost 1000 votes. Not really. You know what I mean though.
Thanks for like!
I also grew up hearing and using the term Oriental. And I don't think anything OF it.
All the pictures that you uploaded as an Asian they’re all FOBS!
I see nothing wrong with the word "Oriental". However if I don't know where the person is from, I prefer to call them Asian.
Well I'm half Asian, and I just want to say it isn't racist. It's just a reference based on continent.
Same would go to referring to Europeans as some else as "European". As long as the base isn't racist, it's all good in my opinion.
Like Orient Express
Yes exactly
It is basically the same thing. Asia is the Orient. So no it is no offensive.
You know what racist calling an Asian girl hello kitty and an Asian boy Pokémon
No. That’s like saying Caucasian instead of white is racist.
It’s not racist but more of an improper use of the word since it’s used to describe things from Asia such as objects and not people as my adopted Korean sister explains it , such as an oriental rug
If I were Asian, I wouldn’t care. It wouldn’t bother me. Words don’t necessarily bother me.
I think it is if not racist, it is offensive, as the Asian's I know feel offended when referred to as Oriental.
The same as most Native Americans, feel it is racist and offensive to be referred to as Indians.
My girlfriend is Chinese and neither she nor any of her friends are offended by being called "Oriental." Before I met my current girlfriend, I dated a woman who was a member of the Iroqouis tribe. She was not offended at being called an Indian.
Are you an Oriental/Asian or an Indian/Native American?
As I said most, not all. I am going from personal experience, and the Asian and Native Americans I have come into contact with. Had an issue with being refered to as, Oriental or Indian.
Probably as racist as referring to a white person as caucasian
Didn't you know? Everything is racist these days.
First time hearing about the word
Why do you have to refer to them as anything put a person?
For the same reason that I sometimes need to refer to people as G@G users, Europeans, goat herders, atheists, or any other grouping. Sometimes, most of us talk about groups of people who have something in common, and we identify them by the common characteristic.
If one person thinks it is racist then just play it safe. Don't get all high on your right of speech and shit. Have some courtesy.
Is Orient Express racist?
I mean it’s not that hard to just simply call someone Asian. It’s less syllables than oriental anyways. Lol less of a mouthful
Not racist just outdated
West Asia is oriental
Okay, but is it racist to refer to someone from Asia as an "Oriental" rather than "Asian"?
Yes. Oriental is not the appropriate term anymore, just like black people prefer not to be called "colored" anymore either
Are you Asian/Oriental? My girlfriend disagrees with you.
I am Asian but I don't consider it some hateful
The war on speech continues...
Oriental apples to objects. People are Asian.
Parallel: Europeans are not called Occidental.
The term "oriental" was the most commonly used name when I was a child and many older people stll use the word to apply to people.
I've never heard of an Oriental apple.
So because your elders did it, it must be correct? Ok, I'll look for you on the party line later. KL159
Because your generation doesn't do it, it must be incorrect?
My generation didn't correct the wrong. I heard "oriental" in reference to Asians in my youth, but I didn't accept it as infallible truth.
I live with a CHinese woman and she is not offended by Oriental and she even uses the word herself.
What's your point? One Asian person doesn't care, so that perspective applies to all Asian people?
She told me that all of her Chinese and Japanese friends feel the same way about it. So I think the offense is not inherent in the word but is feigned offense by younger people who have taken lessons from the woke MSM.
You, she, and her friends are entitled to your opinions. Things change. Evolve!
Change, simply for the sake of being different, is not a positive. Change should be embraced when it makes us better people, or when it makes our lives easier. But changing and simply claiming it's a good change without a real reason is phoney.
Change for the sake of being different is the American way! The country is based on bucking trend. You may be older, but you're definitely not wiser. Evolve or be left behind.
"Change for the sake of being different is the American way!" That is lunacy.
Should I go get a bunch of tattoos and metal sticking out of my face to keep up with the times?
Obviously, you are "undoubtedly" correct so there is no point in continuing this dialogue.
Different means tattoos and piercings? Ok... sure.
Yes, I am correct. At least we agree on that.
Happy New Year!
You need to have the last word, right?
I don't think racist as much as archaic.
Perhaps imprecise usage but not really racist.
Not at all.
Nowadays, yeah. We don't use that word anymore.
I don't know idc
Very true
I think it’s racist to call them Asian. Asia is a huge continent, technically I’m Asian then
Many Orientals disagree with you. In fact, at present, among those respondents who say they are Asian, 8 have said it is racist and 8 have said that it is not racist.
So is it racist to refer to someone as a South American? It's a huge continent.
Call them chinky
