Given that I have worked in politics since the late 1980s, you quickly learn that you will be working with people - even on your own side of the aisle - who will have strong opinions with whom you will disagree. So, as a matter of basic civility, if the situation requires it, you make known your views and get on with things.
Where possible, if the situation permits, you can even go the extra mile and discuss your differences. Indeed, when that opportunity arises, I love it. I love debating issues, understanding policy positions and debating political philosophy.
Unfortunately, the press of business rarely allows time for more than superficial discussions. So you say your peace and you agree to disagree.
Even then, sometimes, you strike gold. When I was working in the House of Representatives, I met a guy who was working for a Member of the other party. We were working together because our bosses were jointly sponsoring some legislation. (Yes, that does happen every now and again.)
So we got to know each other, got to know our respective s/o's - his wife, my live-in girlfriend - and became good friends. He had a great sense of humor and when we disagreed, we usually would just crack a joke.
For example, when he would come into my office he would say something like, "Hey, just thought I would drop by to see who you were oppressing today." To which I would retort, "No one because you guys taxed all my oppressor money away."
It would go on like that and we were good friends. Unfortunately, he decided he was tired of the expense of living in DC and so he and his wife moved back to their home state. We still exchange Christmas cards and the like, but we are not in touch like we used to be.
Bottom line, you observe the courtesies. It costs you nothing. It does not require that you give up strongly held views and it makes understanding and working with others so much easier.
Of course, sometimes you run into those who are less than diplomatic. Those situations one handles according to circumstance, but again, always from the starting point that, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Life is not so short that there is not time for courtesy."
It works in my professional life in politics. So it works in my personal life.
Some people have completely stupid ideas. and honestly these people only understand the violent words.
generally speaking, i don't take the opinion of others, it's a waste of time. and I have a much higher intellectual level than most of the people I chat with which makes any discussion even less interesting.
@michael02serres Some people do have "stupid ideas." What of it. You will not persuade them by so characterizing their ideas as such. Even then, you may not be able to persuade them, but the reason that democracy can function is that human beings are - as Aristotle said - "language users."
To simply abdicate your obligation to listen and discuss is to undermine the very foundations of democracy. You are simply one part of the mindless herd that you disdain.
Believe me, I have in the course of my career, run into more than my fair share of the obstinate and the absurd. Be that as it may if we START from that premise, all the rest lapses into a fruitless dialogue of the deaf - and thence into mere brutality.
If you meet someone who only understands violence, then you must, of necessity, adapt to that reality. However, to start at that point risks disaster.
Besides, always recall, when seeking to persuade, it is not what YOU want to say, it is what you want the other person to hear. This puts the burden on you.

I don't care who you are this world each and every single one of us are different each and every single one of us has beliefs that connect to our morals or values are ethics and I think that's a beautiful thing I can't put somebody down for believing in something that they believe in and if I don't see if their way that's okay that doesn't mean that I'm wrong or they're right or vice versa it means it's their opinion and it's who they are on the inside. I look at it like this I never really like chocolate ice cream before now I love it well not love it love it I like it LOL I didn't like artichokes and now I love them every single minute is a moment in time and just because we believe in something one day doesn't mean that we're not going to change your mind a week from now we grow we have new Awakenings there's nothing wrong with that
I am ok with them until they start lying to me. I consider myself to be intelligent (and my physical health care doctor's have told me I am). I am intuitive as well, and also street smart, a very logical person. So when someone comes up against me, I can either keep my cool when they bullshit me, or sometimes I just have to walk away from them, which doesn't happen very often. I detest arguing now that I am older. I just don't have the time or energy to argue anymore. But when someone tries to tell me I am a white supremacist or racist just st because I am white - well I might find the energy to argue that, because it is bullshit and so untrue.
If I have strong opinions, then A. I can be a bit opinionated at times (though I do try to see other ways of thinking as well), so if it's something I feel very strongly about, I may be a bit annoyed if I'm being honest, but I'll get over it. I don't tend to discuss it, as I find that when it comes to touchy subjects such as politics, things get heated pretty quickly. I'm typically nonconfrontational and would rather just let them have their beliefs while I have mine.
If it's something I have an opinion about, but not an extremely strong one, then B. We do all have different opinions, and that's okay.

It really depends if they are an extremist / fanatic type of person.
everyone else I am more than happy and discuss things with them.
i have found a lot of people have certain views not based in factual information.
you sit and discuss stuff with them, have a tea etc and explain things, often they either change their views or are not quite as blinkered.
In real life I won’t yell at say a homophobic with extreme views, I just throw them out of a window etc
This is more so, if say (which I have experienced) it’s directed towards my sister or friends, I have zero qualms with throwing them off a very high building.
90% of the time in real life I am fairly diplomatic and do listen to another persons view point,
I don't interact with all people and ideas. Not all discussions are worth having. If I've decided it's worth having then my reaction will largely depend on their tact.
If they're argumentative, defensive, reactive, throwing in insults then I'm likely to tear them a new one because they drew first blood. Mutually assured destruction.
If they appear to be honestly coming to the table stating their genuine opinion then I'll give them the same respect and stick to the issues. Done it plenty of times. Sometimes they leave mind changed. Sometimes I leave changed opinion. Sometimes we part respectfully disagreeing because we're at an impass and at the same time not children about it.
Depending on who you ask I'm sweet or an asshole. I mirror what I'm given. Usually more measured but none the less aggressive at times so aye 🤷♂️
u I can’t tolerate stupid people who are so ignorant as to be homophobic, transphobic, sexist and/or racist. So in the end I have to agree to disagree. I won’t bother wasting my time trying to educate someone who is that stupid.
Any other subject less severe, I will hear them out and try to understand someone’s point of view and go from there.
I tend to disagree with most people about most things. As long as someone isn't loud or obnoxious about it, I don't care. The moment someone starts insulting me, then I either get really nasty back with them or if it's online, I block them. So disagreement is fine. Being an asshole I won't tolerate at all, though. I voted Option B because I'm not someone to try to change people's beliefs. I used to be though and it's a waste of time.

It’s funny I often see troll comments when I ask questions on here. People somehow think opening with insults and name calling makes them win the debate. Truth is they usually automatically lose especially if they have no context.
Also not to go down the proverbial rabbit hole (as we talked about on other posts.). But I notice one gender and people who are associated with a particular political party are typically worse about this than others.
I think you know this about me, but I am a mix of 2 and 4. I know I am not going to agree with everyone and I'm perfectly fine with that. I just also love to hear their point of view on it. I like to see if I can be persuaded to see their points of view (like I talked about with you yesterday and I actually am good with modifying my position because of what you said).
We should all be willing to just listen to what others have to say. You don't have to agree, but we can all be civil.
Im pro gun and pro life and am vocal about both. I can never really agree on compromises on rhose two thinga bur every other political issue i can. Weather its talking lgbt, feminism, race, etc i have no exteme opinions other than certain movements under those umbrellas got highjacked and poisoned the wells a lot. Same for people in some pro 2A communities or redpill and manosphere which imho tend to be right leaning.
We all have different beliefs and have to accept it. You'll obviously view someone as stupid if they're very different when understanding than you are. But if you don't accept it for being what it is, and you try to convert them to believe what you want them to believe... or if you get MAD... you're just falling for the trap the USA has set us up for when it comes to segregation.
Politics and religions are just tools to control. Neither are real.
I've realized that people are constantly lying to themselves. Which in turn makes them more dumb and believe ridiculous things. Because they refuse to believe the truth so they have to come up with ridiculous alternatives to believe in. Which means that they completely ignore their own common sense and become irrational. I view these people as crazy so I don't care if they have different views.
When a person is honest and has the correct opinion, I admit I was wrong.
I honestly never care so much about anything - But when I start talking about ssomething I really enjoy it and can't stop - more because I'm talking and feel animated and fun than because of how invested in the topic I am - I'm not gonna lie I usually try to say the most controversial shit I could come up with and specifically try to anger people who have certain ideals - Some people have issues with me because every week I say different things😂
Depends on how egregious of a view it is and my overall opinion of the person.
If it's someone who I recognize as possessing common sense/sensible moral compass in other circumstances, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.
But if it's someone I just met and one of the first things they express is something I deem totally idiotic, the chances of them receiving the same kind of benefit are slim.
It depends on whether their belief is based on fact, or is fueled by misinformation from inflammatory sources. I have no interest in listening to people telling me that Biden stole the 2020 election, or that global warming isn't real, or that Covid-19 is just like the flu.
This was never even a thing 20 years ago. Now it is a way of life. A few years ago I had to move my office to a different building and there was a professor that had her office next to mine. We used to exchange pleasantries and talk sometimes. I put a Trump sticker on my office door and all of a sudden this supposed highly educated person would not even look at me.
My life is a no-drama zone. Take notice I don't comment much on political questions. I will tell you one time to knock it off if after that warning it continues one of us is leaving. I can sum up my politics this way. I want democrats to get the hell out of my pocket and Republicans OUT of my bedroom!

It really depends on the belief. If it's religion I don't care they can believe what they want. If its something like I don't know not believing covid is real/ refusing to get vaccinated then I'd drop em.
I don't care and even like it sometimes depending on whether the views originate from emotions or from facts. If someone is a nutjob who feels that something is right just because he feels that it is right then I think that's stupid and I walk away. I try not to be offended because often times people who say, do or think evil have underlying trauma that isn’t obvious and I try to give each person a reasonable chance to be my friend or distant acquaintance.
Would like to discuss it with them and exchange views unless there is no reasoning on their part and all they do is rant and rave at which time I get out of the discussion.
I never show a reaction, but in my mind I usually hear something like, “Man that dog is high af”. Or “That’s stupid, you’re stupid. Stop being stupid (OR, maybe I’m just being rhetorical)”
Some of the best discussions you can have in life is with people you can tactfully disagree with. This is called debating not hating.
But a certain political party has seen this much differently in last 5 years.

That’s completely fine. But I encourage you to take a step back and see how the person is behaving. Are they otherwise a reasonable person? Did they bring up the viewpoint you dislike from a condescending or hostile POV?
Some of the best conversations I’ve had in life were with people I tactfully disagree with. That is we both know the conversation was about figuring out WHAT is right vs being right. It forces me to think about my own position harder and vice versa. If they can prove my viewpoint wrong i do not take that as a defeat. Rather it’s a win because I have become a better informed individual. The person who proved their viewpoint to be more accurate doesn’t get “satisfaction” in being right either. Rather they are just pleased to see eye to eye on something.
What bothers me is society is more and more considering “debate is hate” especially on political issues. Then people polarize and live in echo chambers.
This isn’t good. Not good at all for functioning society.
@globetrotter22 You convinced me into trying to understand the other person's point of view. I usually don't say anything because I want to avoid conflicts. Also when someone strongly disagrees with something or with someone they're usually aggressive and rude. That causes me a lot of stress and I don't need that.
I agree with you, it's important to have respectful and open discussions about many topics. Otherwise we can't solve some of the biggest issues that our world has.
There is a good saying that you can judge a person’s success in life by how many uncomfortable conversations they are willing to have. I am dealing with this right now because I had to ask one of my live in tenants to move out of my place for not respecting my rules. I don’t enjoy it but it had to be done.
But getting back to the differences in opinión (often political/sociological). Yes our society is getting worse about this. One reason is we have become so reliant on social media and are unwillingly to have face to face conversations. People unfriend/block people they politically disagree with. Sometimes that’s justified if the person is a nutjob. But more often than not the other person might actually be reasonable and you would handle it different in person.
The best way to handle these conversations is to first ask the person why they feel a particular way. Ask about their experiences. Just hear them but listen to them. When someone feels like you respected enough to be listened to they usually calm down and are more open to hearing your side of the story.
And if you both present each other’s sides and still disagree then agree to disagree. But you can leave off still being friends.

I had an ex girlfriend from 7 years ago who was a moderate liberal at the time (she’s sadly gone radical). I have been a moderate conservative for most of my life except in 2008 when I voted for Obama.
Her and I had some of the best in depth discussions about political topics. I gave her new insights on abortion. She gave me new insights on homosexual behavior. We both benefited from that.
Sadly (even horrifyingly) this kind of relationship would be next to impossible to have nowadays. This hurts both men and women.

I know it's common to break up due to political differences in the US.
You have no idea what I have had to put up with in the last 5 years living in a blue state snd trying to date. I have never seen this prejudice behavior from women all my lifetime.
For example I was involved with a program that helps homeless people in my city. It has Christian roots and we helped hundreds of homeless people. There was a girl I talked to on a dating app for over a month. I one shared a FB page about the program. When she saw it was Christian based she said “oh I didn’t know you are religious. I don’t think I can talk to you anymore”. This was after an entire month of talking. Instant judgment.
Most conservatives are not racist, homophobic, xenophobic, etc. The few ones that are get mass media attention because that goes along with a narrative.
We actually want what’s best for everyone but very much disagree about how the left goes about it.
Being a woman you usually have more options than men in dating and you get leeway to discriminate. If you are happy with a liberal guy than good for you. But honestly you may have self sabotaged yourself with some very good opportunities. Make sure you take a step back and ask questions with an open mind. You might be surprised what exists out there. You might learn something about yourself and have second thoughts about how your Democrat friends view things.

If I could move away i would. I spent time in Mexico last year and down there people actually had legitimate concerns like staying safe and feeding their children. They didn’t have time to worry about gender pronouns. They see bewildered at the insanity up north.
There are some things I love about my country. We do enjoy a high standard of living all considered. But there are things I hate. People to invent things to bitch about. Feminists are getting what they want here and they just get more miserable.
