Why is is socially acceptable to stereotype southerners as hilbillies?

Leftists whine about stereotypes and say it's bigoted and that you're misinformed. But then they do it to southerners.

I do not say it is okay, but does seem to be more socially acceptable to mock or accuse white people in general of racist, anti-sematic, and homophonic tendencies.

Lets be honest when you think of and racist, anti-sematic homophob you do not picture a black guy, or women in you minds eye. You think Confederate Flag waving, or some type of Neo-Nazi swastika tatted white male.

Where in true all racists are just as likely to be prejudice or a bias against another race... but lets be honest the white Southerns and Germany Nazi made an industry out of discrimination, and use racial injustice as corner stone of their culture. So although it is a uncomfortable true about your shared history in America... I am tired as a white male of being held responsible for the sins of my GREAT, GREAT, GREAT, GREAT GREAT Grandparents.

But as a white guy from California, who has lived around the world, to include the eastern, Midwest, Southern and Western United States I find it very troubling to see the Confederate Flag proudly displayed as symbol of pride and white heritage. I lived in Germany for three years and it is against the law to display a Nazi Flag there. But I have seen most predominantly in the South.

But as the old saying goes, don't you the North may of won the fighting, but the South won the war. And it really pisses me off that historical record since reconstruction really reflects that truth. Because as a white male I feel I have to live with unfair stereotype places on me but promoted by the stupidity of others.

I live in the south. There’s a difference between southerners, red necks, hillbillies. Now, I live in a tourist city so there’s a lot of people here from New York and New Jersey, however many of the true natives here do fit a stereotype, I’ll just say that.

by the way this is coming from someone who lives in the south lol… There’s a lotta hillbillies but they’re in the deep south and 100+ miles away from the cities.. The cities are filled with folks who look like they could be from Hollywood too.. People just see southerners as white trash hillbillies because that’s how they’re portrayed to people who live outside of the south and in big cities 🙂

Because they break people up by "classes" so they can separate protected classes from unprotected classes. White people are the majority therefore classified as an unprotected class.

Most leftists are city people who already have a city vs country type dynamic and they look down on them as uneducated/dumb and so on. This scenario is a mix of white majority in the south on top of city people looking down on southerners in general.

Fully comfortable labeling you a hillbilly if you're southern and white. If you're a southern black they won't do that unless you establish yourself as right wing. Because now it's left vs right so they'll feel justified revoking your "protected Class" coverage.

I'd rather befriend a "Hillbilly" in the South than some stuck up New Yorker. I come from a small farming town in Ireland so I have a lot in common with Southerners and people in Virginia area. Really lovely people there. My cousin married a Southern girl from South Carolina. She says some of the stereotypes can be true but a lot of it isn't. Just like how it isn't true that Irish people are all drunken ' n angry red heads.

One of my local friends is a racist and crazy but he's one of the nicest and realest friends I know. He will befriend black people if he feels like they are not racially motivated.

Most racists have some reason why they don't like their chosen race and if you prove yourself worthy they may give you a chance.

I’m a Texan from a share cropping family. Hillbilly is just a word folks use to describe usually southerners, but you can find hillbilly type folks everywhere in all the states. Some of the funniest I ever saw was in Maine. (I traveled up there to pick up cows onetime)
My granddaddy was a Cherokee so when we was at his house it could be anything in the pot. Like possum, BBQ coon , rabbit I had a lot of rabbit growing up. Squirrel stew etc. I preferred the rabbits.

People regularly call for Republicans to be killed and celebrate it when it happens on reddit and Twitter while those defending Kyle Rittenhouse get banned. It's also acceptable to call people "coons or crackers" but the N word gets an instant ban just about everywhere. Which isn't necessarily a republican thing but it's acceptable because the stereotype of Republicans is that they're just a bunch of white people.
