What is your opinion on fake self-defense gurus?

Alright, check this out. There's this guy on YouTube with a channel title "Detroit Urban Survival Training" and he has been exposed as a fraud. He makes videos about what to to do if you are confronted with a gun or a knife, and the usual shenanigans about self-defense. My problem is that when you are teaching your students moves that do not work in dangerous situations, it can get them killed. The same goes for fake martial arts.

What are your thoughts on the issue? Do you think fake gurus should get sued, thrown in prison for what can potentially happen if you apply it? Or do you think they should be allowed to sell their courses just like everyone else?

Pretty simple. Real self defense be it firearms, knives, hands and feet etc, is actually really boing stuff. Fundamentals > advanced application of the fundamentals > practicing said fundamentals to improve performance. The whiz bang BS you see on John Wick is a fantasy. And said fake gurus *see below

actual firearms instruction from actual professionals. there's no drop kicking people out of windows, ricocheting bullets off of the ceiling, taking peoples guns apart while they're still holding them (which is easy to do to a Beretta handgun, but thats not the point) just boring old fundamentals. Breathing, foot placement, using cover, MOVING, actually hitting what your aiming at, and best of all, RUNNING THE FCK AWAY, best tool in your self defense arsenal bar none!
And thanks to movies and fake gurus, you now have people in the real world believing its overkill to shoot somebody 12 times or more. (Shout out to Michael Brown). Fun fact, handguns SUCK at incapacitating people! Look up any of these Reddit threads "People who've been shot, whats it like?" You'll routinely hear "I didn't even know I was shot until I felt a wet spot on my shirt." Now imagine this person is coming at you with a machete. You shoot them till the drop the freaking machete. No ones flying across the room from your little CZ 9mm John Wick! Or these feminist inspired movies where 5'4, 110lb women throwing grown men across the room with relative ease.
Get real training. If it looks cool, like it came from a Matrix film, its probably garbage and will get you jammed the FCK up by some old lady with a.38 who actually knew how to use it.

What's funny is I saw a short clip of a chick who wanted to try out what she learned on her self-defense class against her 6'5 husband, so she goes for a basic front kick, only for him to flawlessly take her down and then ask for him money back 😂 If we leave it up to those instructors, most people are gonna die. There's just no other way around it. I agree with you that it's mostly fundamentals and nothing too edgy, but people like the stuff they see in movies, and that's what the instructors are teaching them, only to realize seconds before their death that that's not how it works.

If you are serious to fuck taking self defence or professional pointers from a free online video, then you need your head examined anyway.

Oh no, it's some real shit. They have websites where they teach that stuff to people, not just on YouTube. YouTube is the basic stuff where they advertise their work, but they usually have a membership based website. Not only do they teach people false disarming techniques that can get them killed, but they scam them for money as well.

There is a liar on YouTube pretending to be a medical student at I think Oxford or Cambridge, his advice is so mediocre and worthless, I am not sure he even graduated high school or middle school and he has millions of followers because he pretends to be a medical student at a top school.

Can it get you killed? Yes. But eh, w/e. You pays your money and you takes your chances. It is up to you, the individual, to sort through the crap and find something worth while. The diamond in the rough does not present itself to the weak. Only the tenacious are allowed the privilege of accessing the worthwhile bits of life. You do your own research and you come to your own conclusions. Or don't and get swindled. I don't care which, but just be aware no one is going to save you from your own choices, nor should they.

To the untrained eye, some people might believe that this is effective. How many times in martial arts class has your instructor asked you to wield an imaginary knife slowly so he can demonstrate a move on disarming a knife holder? I know this, because I am a brown belt in Karate. I stopped taking classes because I just didn't think it was going to work. If the person holding the knife is determined on proving you wrong, their grip will not be easy to break, no matter what you do. Your best option is to use a perry and counter. A gun? There's even less room for error. Unfortunately a lot of people wouldn't know that this doesn't work, if he wasn't exposed by actual professionals. There is definitely a certain level of accountability that needs to be taken from the seller as well, because not all beginners can call bs.
