They're saying that the war in Ukraine is problematic because it's occurring in a "relatively civilized, relatively European" part of the world.

I mean don't get me wrong, it's asinine AF when apologists for Putin ask "why is the Ukraine war getting so much attention in the media, what about Iraq or Afghanistan? You don't see those on the news because the Western media just wants to demonize Russia!" Um, no, they aren't getting as much attention because the US isn't fighting in them anymore. But still, the whole idea of being more welcoming to refugees because they look like us is simply disgusting.

It makes a difference that you can literally walk from a European country into Ukraine, and I'll note Germany did accept a lot of Syrian refugees (I did my citizenship exam with one, her German was impressive).

I think another thing is that the region has been stable for generations, and that was spreading outwards into countries that wanted the same for themselves. Somehow, peace is threatening to some people, and that's shocking.

It's absolutely repulsive how much media attention it's getting. While this big distraction is taking place, they are pushing through a bunch of new legislation and human rights violations. Anyone that's been paying attention knows that the media has been demonizing Russia for awhile because Putin is refusing to play by their rules.
