Do you think people with mental illnesses should get less harsh punishments if they commit a crime?

Charles Manson had schizophrenia but spent over 40 years in prison and died their too. Even though he was mentally ill I think he still understood what he did was wrong.

How harsh or not a treatment is to me is based on what seems to work best psychologically to rehabilitate their worst behaviors. I'm okay and would even favor punishments that aren't harsh at all regardless of whether the criminal is mentally ill if that's shown to work best.

At the same time, if the only thing shown to work to rehabilitate them is working towards complete torture, then I'm also okay with that. I just want to go with what works best.
