Trending & News Of course, if it is a Democratic or constitutional republic nation of the people for the people and some of the people want to leave, should they not be allowed to exercise their will to leave?
Large centralized governments often ignore the will of the people, except in large population centers. Local or state governments are far better suited for the needs of the local population, than a far away central government that doesn't give a damn.
Let them leave, let them make treaties to stay friendly and do free trade and whatever else, not a big deal. Even be allies and close.
If it is impossible to peacefully leave, it makes violence more likely to happen, even IF the large central government keeps them from leaving after lots of blood shed, imagine in this day and age how many home grown freedom fighter terrorists there could easily be, that attack others and kill innocents until their demands are met.
Does anyone want to live in a country that stopped others from leaving and now lives in constant fear of the next attack from freedom fighters wanting freedom, who attack random targets and people.
Of course? States have authority to make their own laws, therefore that is their democratic right so
they do not have a right to break the marriage commitment of joining the union.
If you look at Scotland as an example. They've voted on leaving three times and they still want yet another referendum. The problem is if the "leavers" actually win then what happens in a few years time when people change their minds? Do we let them back in.
Another problem is people always want to break free because they think they'll be able to do what they want. In reality you often have several "independence" parties all with conflicting agendas they want to force on people. One welsh independence party for example wanted to break away from UK so they could introduce a pay per mile tax, another wanted to ban the English language.
Then you have to remember that people are idiots. People voted for brexit because they wanted blue passports instead of red.
I have a vacation home on an island. It is a part of the adjacent city and I pay my taxes to the city. The taxes are extremely high and 90% of the home owners as summer residents. They do not use most city services. They are just a cash cow for the rest of the city and since most people are not registered to vote there is not much they can do to secede.
Yes, freedom of association (and/or the refusal thereof) is important, and should be allowed. Of course, whether succession in any specific case is wise, advisable, and/or favorable (& to whom!) or not is another, similarly-important question.
Who said it was allowed? The south who wanted slaves?

Yes, but only with a supermajority vote of 70% or more. This is a serious decision and a slim majority of 51% should not be enough to make this decision. Also, the decision should be permanent and irrevocable. I also wish we could kick a state, such as California, out of our country.
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. The unheard must be heard If you refuse to listen then the oid that flows will be on your hands. Let us leave peacefully because you won't want what comes next.
Not the states. We fought a war over that in the 1860s. As far as territories, I have no problem with Puerto Rico seceding. That island is a bottomless pit for taxpayer money.
Yeah. I don't think they should be required to have the approval of the federal government and other states. It's not their decision,
The Federal Government can not let that happen. NO…
I think it is time for the United States to hold discussions about referendums on ceding.
I’d support that. Black people having their own space to govern
@WhiteBoyChill This is so weird. Why do racists think everyone thinks like they do?
Dude, we got nothing in common. I want the freedom to go where I want without harassment, date whom I please, work where I will and live how I want.
You want insane crazy racism.
So build your insane racist nation and leave "us". . . alone. Because I have no issues with "White" people, "Black" people, "Yellow" people, "Red" people or polka dot people.
I only have an issue with racists.
And I forgot about that conversation we had where you lied about that nonsensical claim. Talking about "Black" and "White" as only an observation of skin color. What kind of fool makes that claim, while saying he supports "Black" people having their nation. That's insane batshit nonsense, right there.
I’m so confused. You’re the same guy who thinks Police and the justice system are racist so why wouldn’t you want black people to have control of their own institutions for once? If the ones set up by white people are inherently racist?
Yes, but it should require a supermajority to move away from the status quo. Not like bloody Brexit.
Not that I support brexit but the EU isn't a country.
Absolutely not. The whole national territory belongs to the whole country and citizens of the territory.
such things should be decided by war. a union cannot be broken any other way and be a legitimate break.
No! What litigation or profound purpose would separate seceding from war?
they can but soon as a act of nature messes things up they will be crying for help
I hope every day that Texas finally tells the rest of america except maybe Florida to eat shit.
I am a strong supporter of the right to self determination
The short answer is no.
Yes, please. Get rid of em
Yes they should
