I recently asked a question about the Puerto Rico Status Act right here and a lot of people said that it shouldn't be allowed to become a state. Well, if you don't think it should be allowed to become a state do you think it should at least be allowed to become an independent country should the people chose?
I've never really understood the status of Puerto Rico. Same with places like Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, and a bunch of places that most people have never heard of.
I know that Puerto Ricans are US citizens, but not the same kind of citizen as people born in the 50 states. They are citizens by declaration or some such thing.
Anyway, I don't know the process of them leaving. I think they should be allowed if they wanted to. But I don't think they'd want to. I also have no idea what would be involved in them leaving, or if it's even possible.
I think states should be allowed to leave also. That was tried once before and didn't turn out well, even though there was nothing in the Constitution forcing states to stay. Everyone needs to keep that in mind if they want to become a state. It's a one way ticket and you can't change your mind later.

I would prefer it gain independence. That place is a shithole. Literally the worst place I’ve ever visited and I’ve done a ton of traveling. El Yunque was cool, but uh, the rest of the island? Depressing, polluted, violent, and gang ridden. Let the Puerto Ricans have it.

No one has the right to deny any self-governing region independence. They need merely decide that is what they want.
That said 3/4ths of their population lives and works in the USA.Interesting question. I know very little about the subject. Do Puerto Ricans want statehood? If so, why don’t they have it? For what reasons would they be denied?
yes, that way everyone will have to pay federal income taxes. Today they don;t pay a dime and are always first to complin that the government does not give them enough.
Puerto Rico is pretty divisive on what they want to do.
Honestly, they are a state in almost every way except for benefits. They don’t have representation.
Puerto Rico should decide it’s own fate, whatever it is.
Why would Puerto Rico want statehood they already get most of the benefits and none of the taxes.
Puerto Rico cannot secede as it isn’t a state. If y’all don’t want to join, don’t. I couldn’t care less either way.
What good will that do us? Let's leave Puerto Rico alone unless they say they want to be a state because I have no idea what the point is.
Puerto Ricans don't want to become an independent country.
Sure. Let them fend for themselves.
Absolutely
