Modern society just seems dumber than ever because A) every village idiot has a voice now due to social media and B) the Powers That Be are intentionally trying to ruin society through demoralization and idiocy so that us strong-willed give up and stop trying to save this wretched species. And they're winning...

This is basically my motto for society and humanity in general.

Think it's always been the case, as they used to think that easier access to factual information would solve the problem, but then the internet came along and we saw what happened when said factual information became so freely accessible.

Science used to be looking into cloning and medical advancement, now it's having to go back to reminding people the earth isn't flat and the efficacy of treatment that managed to all but wipe out some of the most virulent diseases known to man.

I might be biased being in Japan. I see unethical ones, shallow ones, but I never found any lacking in depth or intelligence of a sort I lack when I look closely enough. You know, maybe I'm the dumb one easily impressed. :-D

I've never been disappointed by the intelligence of people with whom I became closest; I've been disappointed in lots of ways but not their intellect.

I got this friend from a long ago and she didn't understand what "carrot" meant in Japanese even though she's Japanese. She also couldn't do basic arithmetic and her dream was to become Korean (as though that's something you can become). But she was an excellent athlete! One of the strongest volleyball players on her team. So I figured she's smart in a different way than usual. :-D

I always saw it like as long as someone is better at anything than me even if they lack those basic skills, I can't really say I'm smarter than them because they can do something I can't.

anyone can become good at sports, same as anyone can learn, but someone who can do something but refuses to do it is either lacking in reason, lazy, or stupid

I might put a bit more stock into genetics and things like that. I don't actually think anyone can become great at sports, or anyone can become a top student. I believe in hard work but I think everyone has a sort of limit to how much they can improve. That said, I'm also lazy so maybe that's why I'm impressed by anyone who can do anything better than I can do.

That's our society... we don't count, write in cursive so much... we probably use our brains less but are more stressed and anxious.
to some extent, we've freed up space for something else.

They are prone to making stupid decisions and learning through pain and tears and even then some still don't ever learn and keeping making the same stupid decisions or aren't willing to know better.
