How much will you pay for this house? It would be good if you could save 20% of the purchase price, but it's not necessary.

In the northeast a modest house will cost 500K. You should have at least 50K for a down payment plus another 10K at least for surprises.

Depends on where you live. I bought my house on the water about 6 years ago for 227,000.00 I had about 60K saved. Then again I am a trades man and worked hard.

What kind of house are you looking for and in what kind of area? It changes a lot. I would say at least ~25k to be somewhat comfortable with say an apartment in a city.
