Do you think people 55+ want to be referred to with a title like Mr., Ms., Dr. etc. by teens to adults in their early 30s?

I think a lot had to do with location. Living in California, being called Mr./Mrs./Ms. is so formal that it's borderline hurtful unless you're a teacher or medical doctor.

Where I live now, it's a basic form of respect. All of my kids' friends have called me Mrs. Confection. We still only use doctor for our own medical doctor, however I have known 2 with PHDs that insist everyone call them "Doctor" (they are both uptight and can't get respect any other way).

Where my husband is from, you're even supposed to refer to your spouse's parents as Mr. & Mrs. I don't. I'm very close to them and they asked me to call them Ma & Pa a long time ago. I'm the only spouse allowed that privilege and heads have turned when in public.

I really think it's whatever the cultural norm calls for.

My son was friends with a girl who was the daughter of a teacher that taught at my high school. I remembered him but never had him for a teacher. When I met up with this guy he insisted that I call him by his first name. I told him he would always be Mr. Smith to me.

It's funny when kids see their teachers outside of school. They get so shocked that their teachers walk, talk, and buy groceries just like everyone else. Our town is small of course, so we see them at Christmas parties and cookouts too. My kids still call them Mr. & Mrs.

We also have some friends that are medical doctors. My kids also call them Mr. & Mrs. because they are our friends (not our personal doctors). They would feel like they are at work dealing patients if they came over and everyone started calling them Doctor.

I'm in that older age group, and it's okay with me to be called Mr. or just by my first or last name, whatever the individual wishes. I'll answer to anything. I must admit, though, that being called Mr. does have a level of "elder respect" associated with it.

I am 67 years old, work with many college men, and I don't care if they call me Older or Mr. Wiser, as long as they are respectful of me. (And I am respectful of them unless they give me a reason to lose respect.)

I know people that have PhDs in education and insist that you call them "doctor". They are really pretty uptight so I went with that.
