How do you feel about people who insist on being called "Doctor" instead of Mr/Mrs etc?

I'm not talking about people who are actually medicinal doctors; I'm talking about people who have achieved a doctorate in their subject.

I understand that earning a PhD is a very hard task, but saying "It's actually Dr John Smith, not Mr John Smith" all the time, and getting annoyed when people dont call you Dr.. it just seems a bit... arrogant?

Or should they have the right to get annoyed and correct people?

I personally think it's annoying and kind of pompous. I get that getting your doctorate is a big deal... but outside your family and close friends no one really cares. But I'm a little biased since my old roommate used to insist on being called "doctor" despite only being a foot nurse and it was the most obnoxious thing to hear every day.

I think that getting annoyed at someone for not calling you your correct title is understandable if it concerns whether or not your married.
But when it comes to dr it just comes across as a bit arrogant to me. Maybe point it out once jokingly but if someone doesn't pick up on it i think u should just be chill about it. :)

Pompous and arrogant. Normally, the only people who would regularly refer to you as doctor are your fellow colleagues and clientele in your care. Insisting someone call you doctor in most social situations where it is completely irrelevant is just annoying and arrogant.

For those one who insist, I always address them by doctor in public. Like, "Hey everyone, I'm pleased to introduce Dr. Smith! Wooooooo, he has a doctorate and remained a virgin all the way up until 28-years old! Let's have a round of applause!" For some reason they don't want to talk me afterwards.

I think it's arrogant, and if I ever encountered someone who corrected me I'd tell them that they have to call me Captain since I'm an airplane pilot. Technically it's the Airline Transport Pilots (ATP's) that are captains, but I like to cause trouble and rattle people's cages.

Shouldn't getting a degree after eight years of college entitle you to a different title.

You're missing the point. A medical doctor and a doctorate equally have a claim to be called doctor. Until you do something that impressive, you could shut your mouth.

Yes, they have earned the title; and I'm not saying that earning a doctorate is an easy task... but I just think that it's a bit arrogant to remind everyone that they've achieved it.

In a workplace environment I can understand that it's unprofessional not to call them by their title, but in a casual situation I don't see any reason to enforce your title.

Well if someone knows your last name they should know you're a doctor. If you're correcting someone who asked you something, it is stupid.

I think it's fair enough saying that they're actually a doctor. But, they shouldn't force Someone or correct them.
