They probably ban Ukrainian flags not any other because they wanna focus on the fight around in Berlin in their memorial and because the Ukraine had been a part of the UDSSR back then and not a country of its own, Ukrainian flags might not right for that.
The hidden agenda could be that there are still many people that have an at least slight favor for Russia in Berlin's state government.
Especially two left wing parties that are ruling the state of Berlin are known for having a favor for Russia in the past.
So for me as a German it wasn't that big of a surprise that a ban of Ukrainian flags happened in Berlin because where I come from a southern part of Germany here are Ukrainian flags even on some official buildings but also on public transport.

It was a hoax that only Ukrainian flags were banned because Russian flags were also banned.

It's a mystery to me. I'm sure Germany would like to avoid antagonizing Putin, just as Neville Chamberlain wanted to appease Hitler. We shold have learned some lessons from that fiasco!

I'd have thought Germany would keep quiet about the end of the war. Apparently it didn't go well for them.

It went better than you think, actually. ''We'' got rid of all this outdated industrial equipment and could replace it with top notch gear. For many years after, ''we'' also were spared from excessive military spending; the money went into 'infrastructure'. Ok: ''we'' lost a few historic buildings and ''we'' needed to hire out 'the Easterners' for a while. I can only recommend losing a war: it keeps you humble, and focused on the better things in life.

@andreasderjuengere My father said the most sophisticated piece of machinery in his 1940's factory was made in Germany. He was busy making Sherman tanks capable of taking on Tigers. My father in law was manning anti-aircraft guns on the Ruhr at about the same time. Unfortunately, they never got to meet, but he got on well with my godfather.

It's all a long time ago, but it should be remembered and not brushed under the rug.

They've banned both Ukrainian and Russian flags near war memorials, by the way.

@goaded/ I'm not belittling our predecessors' technical capabilities. It's just that in the 50's it was a a big advantage to produce with 50's technology - much was brand new and top 'modern' - while specifically Russia had carried off much machinery booty - and was pondering about how it works in the 60's still :D
True - the 40's tools still were very ok... but a lot of that had been bombed away by our visitors.
I'm anything, but not a German ''patriot'' - but the way ''we'' (always) approached engineering and craftmanship is one of my few points of ''pride''

Politicians don't really believe in what they say. They just play a game to get people's support. You can see it by politicians who moved to another party or if the party changed ideology.

Apparently there are more East Berliners (Stalin) in charge than West Berliners (Eisenhower) in Germany these days. East Berlin was on the Soviet Union (Lenin and Stalin’s but not Putin) side of the wall before it fell during Ronald Reagan era.
—From this, I can only conclude that the Germany economy, as is America’s stock market underpinned by Oligarchs and/or Communist monies. Even so, Chancellor said Germany will suffer before taking Putin’s oil.

Germany pumps Russia's oil by Nord Stream. They don't care what's Putin doing in Ukraine.

From the reports I saw Germany stopped taking any Russian oil as part of the sanctions to make Russia use that 600,000 billion reserve to support itself. One never knows as Chancellors will say one thing and do another to lessen economic political pressures.

    You forgot to mention, that
    a) It's Berlin as in solely the state of Berlin not as in the federal government
    and
    b) they also banned Russian flags.

The state of Berlin wants the official end of WW2 celebrations not be intermixed with the current war in Ukraine. It's as simple as that.

Well... would the USA accept Vietnam or Afghanistan flags on a 9/11 or WW2 commemoration event?

The purpose of any commemoration is to recall that event - not politicise it for modern ones.

Flags of other nations are routinely flown on military installations around the world. If you’re stationed on a US base in Germany the German flag will also be flying—in a secondary position to the US flag. They even play the German national anthem for all the US troops to hear—after the US anthem. It’s a little odd, but you are in their country.

@Agagagagaga A military base makes sense. My kids have dual citizenships and of we were to fly both nations' flags, we'd fly the flag of the nation we are in on top. I occasionally see just the flag of a different nation and I think it's rude. Imbibe me flying an American flag on my house in France? 😳

Eh, in America people are ashamed to fly an American flag. It apparently means you’re a fascist to some people.

But flying the flag of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Ireland, or any place else? Well you’re just a proud immigrant.

As Germany sends weaponry to Ukraine, I find such things quite hypocritical.
