AR, AK or M1A? Which do you prefer?

The AK platform is severely overrated. It makes sense in some parts of the world and in certain environments, but especially on an individual level, there's not much merit to it as it was designed to be used in large numbers (like an army or militia) and doesn't really have any advantages that pertain to a private owner. Some of the newer AKs are more competitive in this regard, but they definitely fall short when/if something goes wrong and support is harder to find and deal with.

The M1A and other cold war classics like the FAL are fun to shoot, but wouldn't be my first choice in most situations because an AR-10 is going to perform better in pretty much every way, and with a lot more options. The M1A market has diversified quite a bit recently however.

ARs can be heavily customized to your needs, and found or rechambered in almost any sensible caliber if you so choose. I have a mix of 10s and 15s that are all built very differently to fulfill a variety of roles. My main one, which could loosely be compared to a recce rifle, is my go-to hog and predator hunting rifle. There's a lot of ways to screw up an AR though, and many people will either buy one off the shelf and never actually practice or learn from it, and others try to throw a bunch of random accessories onto them without understanding what they're actually meant for. I personally don't care for attempts at making a "Jack of all trades" setup in regards to ARs though, and I'm not aware of any companies that offer a solid all-rounder that doesn't either cut corners or overvalue itself. Beyond customization, there's plenty of other platforms that can do the same thing, but most lack the aftermarket support and/or are much more expensive.

The Garand is a good automatic combat weapon but difficult to handle in lose quarters.
The AK is a reliable close in automatic weapon.
The AR is the civilian semi-auto version of the M-16 It was replaced by the moderately improved M-4 and now the superior M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. There is a civilian version of it.

ARAK, the AR hybrid (mutant) variation that uses the AK mag and AR and therefore it's called ''mutant''. That is not an option so i would go AK because it is one the greatest rifles that works in all weather conditions, dirt/sand, rain/water
