Mine is a DSG gearbox so it’s both automatic and manual, with sports mode. When you’re in drive (D) you knock the gearshift to the left and you’re in manual mode. It will change by itself if you don’t do it, but it won’t change up. You just notch it forward and release for each gear.

Automatics have come on a very long way in the last 30 or 40 years, they used to be awful but that is absolutely not the case now.
It all depends what sort of driving you are doing, there are certainly times when a manual is better as it gives you full control but if all you are doing is commuting there is no benefit other than cost.

Manual all day every day!! I love the feeling of driving a great sports car with a manual transmission, the control it gives you and the skill required to do it well. I've never had an automatic transmission car, and hopefully I never will, but drivers today are getting too lazy and most don't even know how to drive a manual. Good anti-theft device I'm thinking, lol?

+1 yIt's still fun to drive a manual shifter.
However, I prefer automatics with paddle shift.

Asker+1 yYeah, I think the same. And automatic is the best for long drives and trips.

@Guardian45
Mazda Miata w/ stick shift,
Mazda RX7 w/ stick shift,
Porsche Panamera w/ Tiptronic automatic & paddle shift,
my husband's Ford F150 Raptor w/ SelectShift (automatic w/ manual mode),
our motorhomes w/ automatics - +1 y
Did you ever try a Toyota MR2?
- +1 y
Doesn't automatic defeat the purpose of paddleshift?
- +1 y
@Guardian45
Yes!
The first two generations w/ 5-speed manual were fun to drive.
I got a privilege to drive a TRD2000GT. - +1 y
It had a stick shift that was a flick of the wrist with all the power at your back!
Niiice! How did the TRD2000GT happen? - +1 y
@Guardian45
T'was just like any other 2nd generation MR2 except for the obviously beefier but very handsome body kit. Nothing totally different underneath the TRD body kit except the twin turbos, white gauges & Recaro seats. - +1 y
That car is partially responsible for inspiring me to soup up my '95 RX7 into a track beast.
- +1 y
So do you race then or just enjoy?
- +1 y
@Guardian45
I've been racing go-karts, cars, motorcycles & boats with (and sometimes against) my brothers ever since we were kids. Our dad taught us how to tinker with our vehicles by ourselves. I got left out on airplanes since I was afraid of flying. That's where my husband comes in to fly with my dad & brothers. I've mostly gotten over my fear of flying nowadays. I plan to learn flying someday. - +1 y

Perhaps when I retire I'll take up flying or gliding or just driving cars fast!

+1 yI prefer a manual car as I am able to feel the shift in gears and that is really satisfying for me.
The whole process of gear shifts is very much satisfying for me. Also, total control of your car is with you.
Unlike the automatic ones. In which you need to think twice before overtaking someone.

1974 Chevy C10 (just like the one in the video)
1974 Buick Special
1988 GMC School Bus

They don't makem like that anymore!
kind of depends, I have both.
For a daily commuter car an automatic would be nice.
All but the last 2 of my snowplow trucks were sticks, autos just didn't hold up back then, but the last 2 had autos and were just fine.
Drag racing an automatic, the newer ones shift faster than a manual.But for just fun running around nothing beats a stick.

+1 yI drove a manual car for almost 15 years until last year when I was in an accident. I have an automatic now and I love it, but I also miss driving a manual, and I miss my old car.
23 Reply- +1 y
Why didn't you go back to manual?
- +1 y
@Guardian45 To be honest, it was getting annoying to constantly shift every 2 seconds in the increased congestion and stop-and-go traffic of the city. It sucked all the fun out of driving a manual over the last few years. Maybe I just miss my old car more than I miss a manual, lol. My husband’s car is a manual so I’m not completely separated from it. Besides, my brother works at Toyota and I got an unbeatable deal on a new car, almost $10K under MSRP.

Okay

Asker+1 yI will recommend you to learn manual first then try automatic.

I've seen videos but it still goes over my head!
+1 yAutomatic. Obviously drove manuals mostly since I live in the UK but automatic is just way easier and smooth (CVT)
23 Reply- +1 y
Just to clarify, CVT gives you the choice between the two transmissions right?
- +1 y
Continuous Variable Transmission supposed to be smoother transition for automatics
- +1 y
@Whatthefluff a continuously variable transmission basically creates more of a smooth drive, like you don’t really feel the gear changes it changes seamlessly which is why I prefer it
+1 yManual 100% is far superior, I love the control it gives, especially when towing a trailer.

My kinda girl! Hello!🥰😉
Automatic - it’s what I was raised up on. My dad had a stick shift 88 Ford ranger xlt long bed truck and he tried his best to teach me. Just couldn’t get it right, gears would grind or engine would turn off, and one time there was 5 cars behind us and I had to fire up the truck over and over 5 times. I looked both ways and dad said punch it! So I did - and I squalled tires getting out of there. Needless to say we were both shocked lol. My first and Last time driving a stick shift. 🙂
00 ReplyThey both have their pluses.
At heart I'm a stick shift girl (with knuckle-less black leather gloves, like when I was 16 and just started driving.) But now I'm a city driver and I'll take the lazy way out with automatic.

Ooo. Say that again with feeling!🥵😉
+1 yDepends on what I’m using the vehicle for. My first car was a standard transmission and it was fine, but for my commuting it makes more sense to drive an automatic since they are more fuel efficient.
10 Reply1.9K opinions shared on Travel topic. definitely manual. The problem is all the big SUVs and pickups do not come with it. I ordered two vehicles from the factory because I could not find a 4 speed on any of the lots. Now you can't even order it special.

I can see good situations when auto is good like when your doing a lot of cruising or in stop start traffic.00 ReplyAutomatic. I could drive a manual if I absolutely had to, like getting someone to the hospital. People who can (and will) drive a manual have earned my deepest respect and admiration.
