Yes. The Earth has been known to be round for over 2,000 years. The only reason it took so long for anybody to discover the Americas is because a voyage into open ocean without any idea of where land could be was considered too treacherous and not worth the risk, and most ships of the time weren't built to deal with seas rougher than what was typical of the Mediterranean (the North Atlantic for example is much choppier and more dangerous). Westward exploration was largely spurred on by demand for a faster sea route from Europe to the Far East and India, by which point there was a clear reward to weigh against the risk. The idea that Magellan sailed around the globe to "prove the Earth was round" is absolute BS.

What baffles me is why so many people think math is reality. What the Greeks proved is that *numbers* SAID the Earth was round. The same processes tell you that triangles always add up to 180 degrees, and that having sisters makes it more likely that pou're a girl, and that Galileo was wrong about the Earth orbiting the sun.

The roundness of the Earth wasn't proven until Magellan's fateful trip.

But seriously, I'm not surprised. I watched a great documentary on flat earth people, and I've come to the conclusion that people go along with it because the want to feel like part of a group and feel that they know something that everyone else doesn't know.

Frankly, they want to feel included and important. That's why they cling to this idea. Same can be said about other conspiracy theorists also.

Honestly, you're not wrong. I work with some very educated people and i know they'd make fun of flat earth believers. It really does appeal to those with less education.

That way when the can "prove" it they feel smarter than those around them.

The difference is today we let anyone, regardless of education or intelligence have a voice. Back in the day you had to provide evidence if you went against established beliefs and the greater your claim the greater the burden of evidence. The Greeks would have laughed their heads off at today's flatearthers and they wouldn't have been invited back. Nowadays thanks to the Internet they can push their nonsense over and over again.
