Why is everyone doing drugs in America?

We lack a focal point. This country was founded on religion, not hard work, efficiency, decadence, or anything more existential. By and large we've abandoned religion in America, that leaves a big hole where meaning and identity goes.

I mean, isn't that the first assumption people usually make when you are clean, that you're a straight laced church-going type? When I stopped doing drugs I had about 2 friends left from that scene that would still hang out with me, from how my other "friends" avoided me you'd think I caught leprosy or something.

I truly think it's a lack of identity though. You go to Mexico, or Central America where the drugs are cheaper, more available, and the legal consequences are about non-existent for doing them and notice far far less addicts, there are still casual users, but most of that production base is mobilized for moving product to the US rather than personal consumption.

I couldn't throw a stone without hitting a blown out meth head in Vegas, same with a nodding off heroin user in New Orleans. I'd see maybe one to two people a week off the rails there. So, either we need to get back to religion, or find something different to fill that hole. If even fentanyl won't do it, more drugs aren't the answer.

The sad thing to me, is when it gets to rock bottom is when people start to actually consider where they're at and how to get out. Prison is a good example there, or AA/NA having a high success rate while calling on a higher power, whether it's god, Allah, your family, what have you.

In prison, only about 10%, say 15% with your other, non-affiliated column, don't have or find religion in a hopeless place. They're also less likely to be in that recidivism category, 11% less likely, which is a big impact, as within 5 years 50% of prisoners released will be convicted of a felony again. 66% will be arrested. as 600,000 people are released from prison each year, and 9 million from jail, a drop of 11% is substantial, but a thorny political question, so no one wants to touch it.

The study is old, because who wants to fund a study of religion in a positive light? Anyway, it's something I started to think a lot about when I started going back to church for my kids. There's community, support, and even if you don't believe, more hope to make it out of bad situations just from those two previous factors.

Lack of fulfillment in other areas of their life leading to malaise, adding to a culture obsessed with quick fixes and easy answers, mostly. Wide availability dousn't hurt, nor does the fact that many can be used in small amounts fairly safely for a while.

They are "depressed" because their lives are not purposeful or meaningful, and/or they are unable to solve their problems or accomplish their goals in life.
