You SERIOUSLY ask that after all the COVID lockdowns and seeing Australia and Canada turn into government-oppressive hellholes?
Then again, the people who oppose gun control are the ones who NEVER have to worry about defending anyone, protecting others, or fighting to preserve freedom from tyranny. So why do I bother asking?
We need to protect ourselves, the SCOTUS has said police have no legal obligation to protect anyone. Even if they did, they are 90 minutes away in rural America, so if a madman is trying to break into my house. What would you suggest I do for 90 minutes until police get there if guns get outlawed and the criminal has an illegal one they bought from gun trafficking. The cartel smuggles guns in along with drugs too.
Im American and have no interest in firearms. My dad’s side of the fam and my maternal grandpa’s side of the fam all love hunting with shotguns but they dont carry firearms outside of that. I’m personally not comfortable around guns in any form including those. And that feeling has stuck with me since long before my ex even pointed a glock at me

when your life has been saved by the one your dad was carrying when you were a child (me), I guess you grow up realizing that guns prevent and stop a whole shit ton more crimes and murders than they will ever be used to commit. When your sister stops an attempted rape on her college campus with a gun she had in her purse, I guess you realize there's a lot of evil in this world and the police and government aren't able to be there to stop all of it, so it's up to us to protect ourselves. I have many guns, and not one of them has ever hurt a person. So no reason to fear them unless someone is attempting to cause me harm.
In this school shooting rating they should count the mass killing with knife and others weapons... Also in France we have many many mass shooting but is it usually druggies that killed others druggies...
And I guess they're attached to it cause they're used to it people don't like change.
We value our ability to protect ourselves from tyrannical leaders. We were kinda founded due to running from a corrupt EUROPEAN ruler. Our guns are not just for personal protection from criminals, but also from a government who wants to take our rights away. As for guns not being easily accessible, this argument only works if you can 100% guarantee it will stop gun violence, which it does not. Even though it is not to the same extent, European nations do still have gun crimes.
"On the islands, we solve our issues with our fists. These gangsters over here, they don't wanna fist fight, they just wanna shoot you. So we had to get guns too."
American people feel they need guns for protection, because other American people feel they need to shoot people to be respected.
I'm from the UK where firearms are next to impossible to get a licence for, and even on the black market they are hard to get. The most common weapon used by criminals is a kitchen knife, followed by screwdrivers, hammers, bats and the butts from pool cues the list is endless. If someone wants to kill another they will find a way. In the end a gun be it a pistol, rifle, or shotgun it is only a tool which by itself is not inherently good nor bad just like a hammer or a wrench.
It's a damn sight harder to kill someone with one of those weapons than a semi-automatic firearm. Name one person who's harmed hundreds of people with a knofe.
@goaded So far the largest number of fatalities I've heard of in the US is 21, In the UK the worst was in the Scottish town of Dunblane where the Mayor and 15 children were killed outright, and another child died in the hospital. A further 15 people, the vast majority of them children, were wounded. I've never heard of hundreds. injured at one go. The largest number of people injured in the UK in one incident that was not firearms related was on 3 June 2017, three men launched an attack in central London shortly before 10 pm. A vehicle was driven into pedestrians on London Bridge before crashing near Barrowboy and Banker pub. The attackers subsequently attacked people around the nearby Borough Market. Eight victims were killed and a further 48 people were injured. Five members of the police force were also injured during the incident.
So you can't name anyone who was able to kill remotely as many people as one man with a bunch of guns in Las Vegas (61 dead, 411 by gunfire). 7/7 was four people with bombs, Dunblaine was the reason for restricting gun ownership, and by and large that's worked. The London Bridge attack was 4 people who killed 8 people.
@goaded The worst mass killings that I’ve found was the Bath School massacre, it was a series of violent attacks perpetrated by Andrew Kehoe on May 18, 1927, in Bath Township, Michigan, United States. The attacks killed 38 elementary schoolchildren and 6 adults, and injured at least 58 other people. Prior to his timed explosives detonating at the Bath Consolidated School building, Kehoe had murdered his wife, Nellie Price Kehoe, and fire bombed his farm. Arriving at the site of the school explosion, Kehoe died when he detonated explosives concealed in his truck. I rate that the worst because of the number of children who died it wiped out every child in the town that was not a toddler or babe in arms.
That's a terrible story from nearly 100 years ago. I wonder if explosives are still as easy to buy in the US. The challenge, though, was to find someone who's harmed hundreds of people with a knife, to make the point that firearms make it much easier to kill lots of people. That's what they're designed for, after all (especially when combined with high capacity magazines).
but.. but.. but Liberals want our guns.. but.. but.. but.. Its our 2nd Amendment.. but.. but.. but. I feared for life so I shot him.. Tots and Pears...
Well for me at least where i live now has mountain lions and bears so i have a rifle always ready to go just in case and, I've also been to places where people have to deal with wild boars hurting them or their animals. People that are very anti gun have usually never lived anywhere that dangerous before.
It is in our culture, some places are more dangerous than others, half of American homes have at least one gun. Home invasions happen, homeowners shoot them.. Many states have gun friendly laws. We have veterans and hunters etc... I can teach a person to fire a handgun in one hour, male or female. Small women can handle 9mm handguns.

It seems kind of dishonest to only count gun killing like it makes some kind of point. Why don’t they count all mass killing regardless of what was used? I’m sure there will still be more in the US, but this like counting gun suicides and comparing against Japan. The US gun suicides would be way higher but in reality Japan has a much higher suicide rate.
Gonna invest into something like a gun but it's not soon enough. Having an actual gun now a days is kinda scary due to... current events.

Because we want to be cool with guns like Switzerland but fail since we aren't as smart as them. Also america encourages bullying instead of preventing it so it's actually not that surprising
We need better gun control but at the same time still have them available for security. LA is one of the hardest places to get a gun but criminals still get them off the black market so we're just easy targets

If the politicians didn't work so hard to promote illegal gun ownership and to defund the police citizens would not feel like they have to own firearms for protection.
agree with tighter control. Person has a right to hand gun to protect themselves. They must pass a drug test, not be on medications and pass a psych test before a board if have had psych problems.
that do a little good. Also, you cannot buy assault weapons or possess if you aren't allowed to buy alcohol.

This Samoan gangster summed it up perfectly.

Many reasons. Safety, racism, america, etc. :)

I imagine its hereditary. Like hunting…or racism. Kids pick up their parent’s hobbies and beliefs.
Tbh, majority of guns are owned by individuals with massive arensals. The majority of americans dont own guns.
Because of the fucked up country we live in and the mental illness around us and protecting our loved ones and ourselves
Because it’s their own safety you
RE—ARD!
I as a woman need it more than a man
this is something no ome ever talks about, women need to invest in a gun for safety it can make them feel so much safer
@historectomy
Exactly
Propaganda and paid off politicians. Just like most things that are wrong with America.
most don't, I suspect. but I bet more are going to.
