Why are echo chambers becoming common in society?

Whether it’s political or hobbies/lifestyle, why are echo chambers becoming more common? Especially in dating world.

I’m constantly seeing people demanding this , my partner must be like me, my circle must be like that, etc. Since when did talking to someone who walked a different life than me or come from a different perspective deemed as unworthy of a conversation or a connection.

I know this sounds like a rant but it’s a genuine question, Why are we afraid to talk to people with different opinions?

Social media didn't start it, but it's what made it possible on the scale we see today. With no real requirement to be exposed to those who believe differently, people gradually lose their sense of legitimate disagreement; that a persos can differ in belief from them, even about major issues, and have genuine, real reasons for believing that way (as opposed to just being manipulated or mislead).

Meanwhile, consolidation continues: Deus Ex brought that up, mentioning dow 90% of media outlets were owned by six companies. That was 22 years ago; today it's closer to 95%, and it's down to five companies, two of which are trying to merge.

Strengthen the institutions, weaken the individuals, and on and on it goes...

The term now is "cognitive bias" as it's more in line with people, and the modern varied means of information gathering that are available.

People like to stick with the familiar as it either gives them a (false) comfort or makes them think they are a part of something they are not.

Anti-vaxxers, Trumpers, and flat earthers being prime examples as while there is a lot of overlap between them, there are some exceptions.

In the dating world, why wouldn’t it be? Why wouldn’t you date someone with a similar worldview over someone with an opposing worldview? The latter seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Two people with completely different, perhaps even conflicting goals, are gonna argue a lot.

what do you mean "becoming" more common? they always existed, cause people tend to surround themself with other people that they like and agree with on things.

the thing that did change is that it is now more easily to find such people you like and agree with around way more absurd things than ever before online that you probably wouldn't have met in real life.

Example: People block anyone who disagrees with them. Then, all that is left are those who agree with them. They live their lives in the illusion that because now that everyone around them echoes what they think, they are right about everything.
