Americans: Would you rather have seen the 40 billion used to "harden" our schools for the safety of our own children, or have it sent to Ukraine?

I've been hearing this debate on the radio ever since the tragedy. Parents are calling into radio programs and are furious that schools are so vulnerable, and yet we hand out money like candy to other countries.

Ukraine is a corrupt sinkhole, but the government keeps pouring our tax money into it because politicians, their friends and family and government contractors (especially defense contractors) benefit from it. It's a lot easier to hide corruption in "foreign aid" to graft-filled countries than it is for federal grants to harden schools. We also don't have a national security interest in Ukraine, but we sure do on our open southern border that the government refuses to secure.

And, unsurprisingly, the White House Press Secretary has said that Biden doesn't care about hardening schools. Actually, no Democrat seems to.

Harden schools there seems to be plenty of covid money around to rebuild high school sports fields. Yeah that sound covid related a long with the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on non covid crap recall all that money and reallocate to be spent on securing our schools. But we know our senile President will give it to where it is not needed. If he does not want to spend it on schools how about our southern border would be ok but not Ukraine

I think that turning all, or most of our nation's schools into something similar to prisons or military bases is not warranted in our situation, as we would be trading a generally healthy and safe atmosphere for one of fear because of extremely rare events.

Most "mass shootings" are not random school massacres.

If we lived during a time of major world conflict, or if school shootings had a significant chance of occurring, then I would say "We need to all be protected.", but as it stands, there is an extremely low chance of anyone dying from a school shooting.

In particular, we should probably stratify mass shootings and school massacres through several variable types; like race, student to teacher ratio, average income, state, and many more factors. Then we can see if there is actually a problem in specific communities or kinds of communities, and we can see if certain social arrangements should have more security than others.

Also, all-in-all, I think that hurting Putin's regime can only help us all. His government and personal network is in direct opposition to our (America's) best interests.

All schools should have operational metal detectors. Period. Along with that, the United States needs to bring back residential mental institutions. The existence of firearms hasn't changed, but the existence of insane asylums has changed. They started closing them in the 1970s, and were all just about gone by the 1990s. It's no coincidence that Columbine happened in 1999. Now mentally unstable people are integrated into the general population, living with gullible relatives that make excuses for them, living in public parks, living on the streets, squatting in foreclosed residences, and living in public transportation hubs in large metropolitan areas. The sick allure of committing copycat or one-up crimes, social media, and the pandemic shutdown are also all contributing factors.

Right after Sandy Hook there was a large sum of money sent to the school districts throughout the United States to beef up their security systems. The schools in my school district have done.
After hearing some information on the ordeal Uvalde school one of the doors to the school was left a jar bye somebody. Basically the security system was broken in that school system because the side door. Was it another student or was it a teacher waiting for somebody to come. The maniac went around to all the doors in that school looking for a weak point to enter. Does the doors have alarm systems on it to let you know that it was left open. Do they have a silent alarm that notifies the staff in the main office. In my opinion there are quite a bit of faults in this situation not just the police.

Who says they had to spend another $40B they don't have, regardless of what it's spent on?

Should they have decent security at schools? Of course. But that ought to come out of the outrageous amount they already spend on personnel who don't actually teach. Nobody's going to miss a few less vice principals, superintendents, and union reps.

I worked in a K-12 school system and I had to buy my own office supplies and had to supply my own computer for the first 3 or 4 months. I am not surprised that school security is underfunded. We should be hardening our southern border and using the 70 billion dollars a year that we have to spend on illegal aliens to harden our public schools and help our veterans and senior citizens.

Given the tiny risk of a school being attacked (yes, it's awful, but *numbers*, people!) and the irrelevancy of Ukraine (we said "You can't join NATO", TWICE, then sent twe million free rides at Harvard to help them- TWICE; what does that say about our honesty?), I'd rather the money be spent fixing our decaying infrastructure. If you're anywhere near the Hoover Dam when it blows, you won't care about EITHER of those issues.

The schools don't need any more money. They already get too much. I get sick and tired of paying so much tax for schools to just waste on stuff they don't need.

Keep in mind that in the US schools are funded almost entirely at the state and local level. When the feds give money for anything, it gives them more control. The feds should stay the heck away from education.

As for Ukraine, I have not looked at it closely enough to have an opinion.

Consider Putin's aims. It would be quite feasable for him to invade a Nato country, dragging US into a conflict. That would probably cost a damn sight more than 40 billion! If nuclear weapons get used, there might be no US to worry about 40 billion!
