Is it legal to copy and paste online articles on your social media?

For example is it allowed to copy and paste articles for your questions/posts/myTakes even if you give credit/source etc?

With something like this, it is impossible to know if some law has been passed. You couldn't read all the laws and court rulings interpreting laws that have been in your life time; let alone understand all of them. Nor could you keep up with all the new laws being passed. Furthermore, when the government wants a conviction, they find some vague law or court decision and claim it is against the law. That is why it is claimed you commit 3 felonies a day and perhaps a dozen of lesser offenses.

Therefore, if you live your life worrying if things you do or might do are illegal, you cannot have a life. If some prosecutor wants to put you in prison, you have no defense because he can charge you with dozens of laws and laws he invents, and sooner or later, he will get a conviction. Or else he could force you to spend months and years and all of your money, even millions of dollars, defending yourself and paying for attorneys.

The thing is that no prosecutor wants to put hundreds of ordinary citizens in prison. After all, he too has a life. Therefore, if you do, it is extremely unlikely anything happens, unless in the unlikely event some copyright owner decides to sue you. Even so, why would the copyright owner want to spend thousands to millions of dollars getting judgments, most of which he could never collect.

You can read the policies the various websites to see if is a violation of their policies, and, if it is a violation of their policy, possibly you may be giving are warning or even banned.

There were times where I took very generic info from the web, and the Admins blocked the MyTake and took back my points. In fact, is was very difficult to word the info in any other way than the way it already WAS!

There were other times when I've quoted word-for-word, included a credit, and the MyTake passed with flying colors. (go figure)

As long as you are not republishing the info for profit and implying it was yours, a quote with a credit line is likely your safest bet, now.

It depends on the copyright holder of the article! Some companies aggressively pursue copyright infringement, especially on sites like this, a for profit commercial site! Other copyright holders, do not even passively check for their. Copyrighted articles, and don’t care. As for “who pays” any copyright suit, my guess is that sites like GaG have in their terms of service, that if you post copyrighted material of any kind, you are solely responsible for the cost of litigation!
