I'm going to go anon because I am a future medical provider who will have prescriptive authority in the U. S. but this kind of thing makes me very nervous. Especially now that the guidelines have changed about prescribing opioids for chronic pain, some of the pain management alternatives that are being floated around aren't adequate to handle people's pain even if it is deemed "chronic" rather than "acute". Also, the DEA is making it so that U. S. medical providers are hesitant to prescribe too many opioids to patients, and rightly so, most of us agree they should be prescribed sparingly but it puts prescribers in the middle of the issue and often on the receiving end of the patient's rage. This is not the first incident I have heard of a patient shooting a medical provider because of being angry over having pain (or sometimes not getting opioids for pain), and I'm sure it won't be the last. I know that anger is the cause of many of these shooting situations, but it scares me that this is a situation where there may not be a good way to prevent this type of anger.
