Putting aside the abnormal amount of corruption and self interest, its all politics. First of all they benefit from the country struggling since they can easily turn that against Democrats, accusing them of destroying the country and they can also use it to motivate voters to support them to "fix the country" or "Make America great again". The more broken the nation is the easier it is to convince people that they "need" the Republicans so its hardly a downside from their point of view since they only care about power and personal profits.

But that has always been the case. Why is it so extreme NOW? Because the Republicans are LOSING and they are getting desperate. As such they can't rely on winning normally and make more and more use out of the few supporters they still have. The best way they found to do this is to make their supporters ANGRY and AFRAID at which point they point their negative emotions towards everyone else which causes massive division.
