Of the $40B most recently sent to Ukraine, approximately $17B of that went to defense contractors to buy/replenish equipment that we gave or are giving to Ukraine. $5B is for food packages for relief aid. there's some other smaller funds in there but about $9B of it could easily get pocketed by someone or some people along the way.

To put into perspective how much money the US is throwing out over Ukraine, it's close to $100,000,000 a day. According to NPR, that means we are spending the entirety of what used to be a year's worth of aid in half of a week.

But it's worth it because the alternative of Ukraine not existing would cost the US and the West QUADRILLIONS of dollars over the next few generations defending against Russia.

Such 'payments' are kind of investments into future business relations, or diplomatic advantages.
ANY country in the world that helps other countries does so, because there's a return in some way.
