Would you rather have enough water for the entire planet but make ocean life suffer or leave the ocean life alone but not have enough water for us?

Was looking into water shortages earlier in my lunch break and just asked myself “why don’t we just desalinate ocean water and distribute it across the globe in massive scales?” Well, ocean life would suffer and the second but biggest thing is the cost of such a task but might be attainable within the next couple of decades.

I’m sorry Felicia but we matter more. We need their water. 👸🤴

Large scale desalination is not practical. Humans compete with other species for fresh water, and mostly we’ve just taken it all. We diverted the Owens river to provide water for Los Angeles, and dried out Lake Owens. The people of Utah are drying up the Great Salt Lake. Russia dried up the Aral Sea. Dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers have greatly reduced the salmon population, starving the orca in the Puget Sound. There’s a long list of irrigation and diversion projects that have harmed other species.

I think a balance could be found. But luckily we can't desalinate yet.

If we could it would be better for us and all other wildlife. Any water removed would be quickly returned.

Captain, you can take all the water out of the oceans that you want, but the chickens will always come home to roost.
Nature sends it back. It's a scientific fact. We have the same amount of water today, as we did a million years ago. It just keeps coming back.

the ocean so big that humans using it to make fresh water won't effect it much unless we count the energy used to make the water fresh water depending on were it comes from

Phytoplankton in the ocean produces most of our oxygen. It's probably best we don't kill it.

Just don't waste it for swimming pools, vanity, useless industrial mass production, and such.

The ocean covers over 70% of the earth, ocean life would never suffer with that small amount of water taken from the ocean to help people on land, problem is the cost of doing it
