What happens if I don't get a tire rotation?

It's definitely been over a year and possibly longer since it's gotten a tire rotation. But it drives well. What happens if I just save that hundred dollars and don't get it done?

Most important part is to insure that the wheels tread is even (especially for a AWD and 4x4) and air pressure are good.

If you decide to rotate regularly:

For rear-wheel drive (RWD) and front-wheel drive (FWD) cars, you should typically rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. For all-wheel-drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles, you will rotate your tires more often at every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. (You can check your cars manual to get more specific milage)

I wanted to add that for a front wheel drive the tires in the front will always have more wear then the back and in a AWD or 4x4 the tread should be even on all 4 wheels or only have about a 3/32 tread difference between tires.

I do find that the front and rear tyres do wear differently but unless I am visiting the tyre shop I won't go there specifically to get it done. Not had any issues in the past 30+ years I have been driving. I do always try to get tyres changed in pairs and will always have the newer ones put on the back so the older ones get changes sooner. I generally drive FWD cars.

It greatly depends on what wear you have on each tyre, across the treads and around, is it even, or are certain areas worn more pointing to under or over inflation or tracking issue.

check all 4 tyres across the tread and also check for any excess wear spots from braking etc and any cuts or nails etc.

your front steering tyres need to ideally have the most tread.

You really should not be going under 3mm.

If the wear is within a couple of Mm front to rear then just change when tread is low, no reason to rotate.

also check for uneven wear across the axle, not always a sign of tracking, can be simply the route you drive being more left hand heavy at times.

always make sure you check your tyre pressures regularly and they are at correct pressure, then do a quick monthly tyre check, condition, depth etc.

Probably nothing. Rotating tires is good maintenance to ensure even tire wear. Uneven tire wear can affect gas mileage and ride comfort. It's also a good time to check tire wear and pressures. Too high or low pressures could lead to a blowout and car crash.

Not doing recommended rotations may also violate the tire warranty.

In summary, a tire rotation is not absolutely necessary but does have advantages.

You'll severely shorten the lifespan of your load bearing tires. The reason you rotate them is to spread the wear evenly among all four tires, and it also helps to identify alignment issues, which can cause a blow out.
That being said, any good tire shop will rotate them for fifteen or twenty bucks. If they're charging you a hundred, they're taking advantage of you.

If your car is out of alignment it can cause your tires to wear unevenly quicker. I don't think I've EVER rotated tires on any car I've owned. So either the cars I've had have had good alignments ( not likely) or this is overdramatized Lol.

Like oil changes its not a constant need. Usually mechs do that for free when you get an oil change.

But most cars are two wheeled. So the wear and tear is always uneven. They rotate the better tread onto the powered axle.

You get even tire wear. When you remove tire try painting and cleaning and using armor all on tye inner side of tires clean rims paint or rust proof brake drums

Keep an eye out on the treadwear. If it's even on both sides of each tire, your alignment is good and you don't need to rotate.
