Can you change a tire?
Could you save yourself? Figure it out if needed? Or would you call roadside assistance?
I change 2 or 3 a month. I've got an impact wrench and an adapter on my jack to use the impact gun to raise and lower the jack, so it takes me longer to get the spare free than it does to actually change the tire. But I stop and help people pretty often. I've also got jumper cables and plenty of basic tools, so I have gotten people's cars running a few times. I'm far from a master mechanic, but I know the basics, and I can tighten a belt or unstick a starter.
You’re a hero. 😇
Yes, actually. Thanks to my dad. Aaand that watching paid off when something popped my tire while riding home on a busy highway of Houston, texas. I was in my noice black boots but I knew how to jack it up, remove tire, grab spare (thank god i had one, was a doughnut though) and keep moving.
But i slipped up and realizd I need the silver thing IN the tire to have it properly replaced. Thank god no one bothered to look twice at it otherwise that's more money gone at the time.
I can’t get a drivers license until I’m 18. My mom said she’ll teach me how to drive and my dad said he’ll teach me how to change a tire. The thing is, both are super strict and expect perfection. I’m just worried that they’re going to be super hard on me when they do teach me - 😭
Learning to change tires is a basic life skill which everyone should know. It’ll be helpful in the future!
Of course, though the spare is harder to get to, and can only be a donut on one of my cars. I have roadside assistance, mostly for my wife. She can change a tire, but isn't so great with using a jack, nor do I feel safe with her doing so on side a road. Also it's helpful for a tow if you break down. Get the car in a shop, get a ride back to another car and carry on.
Good points.
But am soon gona try to change one for the bike, since i have never tried it out.

I would never change a tyre, a wheel with tyre fitted yes, tyre on its own, nope.
I do know how to and in theory could do it, however prefer changing the wheel then taking tyre to garage to change the tyre with a new one or rather 2 or 4 new ones, I never do single tyre changes.
It’s satisfying doing the whole thing. Especially a bike. Rear is a fun pain in the butt to sort out.
Bike tyres yes, even Land Rover tyres.
However low profile tyres are a fucking nightmare to get off the actual alloy and then you need the sealant around the rubber.
So for me yeah will change a wheel and get tyres replaced or use repair kit to plug the puncture and gunk to seal it.
It’s also fairly dangerous getting car tyres on and off the rim of the alloy,
What a about plane tires in your experience? First time I’ve thought about the process. I’m going to look it up.
My mate lost his finger replacing a main wheel lol.
Put it in a hole and the wheel bit him lol.
They use remoulds
Having them blow out on landing is an experience
Yikes, twice!
Of course. I would really hate to have to do it using the flimsy jack that is supplied with the truck. I am amazed that there are not more lawsuits from people getting injured when the car slips off the crappy little jack that comes with most vehicles. The old bumper jacks were much better.
Yes!
Yeap and more
I can also change the tire on the rim to with crowbows and dish soap.
Its me about 20 minutes per tire. That's almost as fast as a tire changer.
Cars, trucks, motorcycles or whatever
(Not my photo, but shows how)
Impressive!
I am my family's roadside assistance, every car or truck I own always have set of tow chains.
I have tow a family member from the middle of Minnesota to Milwaukee Wisconsin just with a set of tow chains.
If your good with a set of tow chains or tow strap. You can do freeway speeds easy.
Just have to pay attention very well, that goes for the tower and the towie
I saw someone being chain towed on a bike once. 🫣
That could be deadly
They were going very slowly.
On the road I don't have a spare tyre with me :)
''At home'' it's one of my least challenges.
🤣 Understood.
''Hayne's'' made it possible ;)
That picture is missing the bottom frame to support the engine
it's got a nice fuel tank though
@muncher717 Yeah: the tank is sexy :) - a reasonable chest and narrow ''hips''.
The Virago does not have a bottom frame for the engine. It's kind of ''hanging-mounted'' The pictures are also not showing the carburetors - a pain in the arse to mount them, heh heh.
The bike was stolen later - so the new ''owner'' really has a problem :D
I'm up to something new meanwhile.
@andreasderjuengere i never saw or heard of a hanging mount before. how does the motor even get mounted? from the top of the frame or the back and front of the frame? doesn't a hanging frame compromise the structural strength of the bike?
@muncher717 There are mounts at the lower aft end of the motor, and a bracket to the forward cylinder head top (the black 'boxy' thing in the picture).
As an advantage I found that this way the V-twin does not induce much vibration to the frame.
Strength: it's a kind of cruiser, and although it can go up to 160 km/h I seldom took it there because wind pressure made it really uncomfortable.
With 34-38 HP There also isn't too much mechanical strain on the frame, perhaps assisted by the shaft drive.
Yamaha built the following model (V-star) with a lower frame, though.
Changing a tire is a basic skill, all of my sisters and nieces know hoe to do it and when they bought their first car, they were all given an extending wheel nut wrench so they could easily remove wheel nuts/studs, and the scissor jacks were swapped out for a hydraulic bottle jack too make lifting the car easier.
They are small things but they make a difference.
Oh nice. I like that idea. How thoughtful and smart.
Yes and I also know how to do required maintenance on a car. Because my grandfather taught me when I was 15. Ha he also showed me how to do both on two different tractors and other farm equipment. Because he was glad for the help.
What a great grandfather to have. : )
Was stuck on the side of a road once and my jack kit didn't have the arm to crank it up. So I had to use a vice grip. A flatbed driver pulled over, laughed at me.
Long story short he pulled out his jack for me. And I didn't even have to show him any tit.
Considering I don't drive, I do know how to change a tire. It's right up there in the, 101 of being a gentleman 😂 always be ready to help a lady out who's struggling with a flat tire.
Very cool. Didn’t think you the type to just peddle by. 😁
When I went to school there was this class called "Drivers Education". To pass the class you had to bring in a note from a parent stating they made you change a tire on their car. If your parents didn't have a car (rare) you had to change a tire on one of the schools drivers education vehicles.
They need to bring that requirement back.
Yes, it’s a life skill I learned as a condition of getting my driver’s license and I’ve had to use it. Also, my Army National Guard MOS required me to know how and occasionally do it.
How much do those big hummer tires weigh? I saw one today, haven’t for a while and made me think of your reply. I wondered if I could even lift one off myself. lol
Hahaha Makes me want to try it now.
All the more fun. : )
I use to work in a garage part time as a kid.. First thing I buy for a new car is a new trolley jack,.,, And yes I know how to change a tire.. Not at Formula 1 speed, but pretty quickly.
I mean a wheel.. I can change a spare wheel.. I don't have the tools to change the tire although I can do it with the wheel machine that goes round.
It’s okay. I was just asking the basic question.
Ahhhhhh. in that case yes :D
I used to work as a mechanic, but even before that, I could change a tire.
It's such a basic necessity, that it should honestly be part of the driving test. Can't change a tire? No license.
I love that idea!
I don’t know how to change a tire…
I don’t think I had a spare tire in the car…
I don’t know the number for roadside assistance…
🤡 = me
DM @NathanDavis. He rescues all.
lmfao…
not me, he bullies me😒
Naw @NathanDavis takes tire changing seriously.
@ Awwwww bless
I change them onto scratching post beds...
@TommyMountainFigure lol who are you blessing
@NathanDavis ugly😛😛
blessings? thought it was my microwave that caught fire again, why all the smoke?
@NathanDavis lol wouldn’t they smell up your home with rubber?
not once they're coated, and wrapped
besides, the smell of tires always reminds me of kindergarten... lmao
@blackcupcake Nobody really. It was just at the way the conversation went..
I love my boyfriend for many reasons but his knowledge of cars is super helpful. I got a flat tire and he came to help me change it. He missed played hockey with some of friends so I made it up to him later that night.
Good man you have there.
I am a lucky woman
I can change a tire but I do have free roadside assistance so if I only have the emergency jack, then I’d rather just use the roadside assistance. If I’m at home and I have a decent jack, I would definitely do it myself.
How long does your roadside take? Mine take four hours to show up average. After two hours to get through the help line. 🤪
Usually only about an hour. Yeah, if it took four hours I would just do it myself. 🤣
@Mangospacho lol
I could... but I don't carry a spare in any of my cars. I figure chrome will get me home. And it always does.
You really only need three.
I actually do have 4 spare wheels for the 69 Camaro, and I will have a spare in the trunk of that car as soon as I find a cheap used tire at the shop down the street. But I was serious about not having spares. The 2010 Camaro didn't even come with one, the 78 Vette is missing the spare and the tub it mounts to the rear of the frame in, and the SRX spare wheel was totally rotted out, so I tossed it. The tire was okay, I guess I could've kept that. I forgot about the Fiero though, it does have the original spare in the frunk.
Tires. I was just joking. 😎
If I was old enough to drive, I could change a tire. However, what would have happen some man would see me, stop, and do it for me. People may not stop if a guy has a flat but they would stop to assist me.
Yep. Even bought better tools for it, just to make it easier. I hate the ones that come with the car b
I agree. They look like single use tools.
Same here! Haha
I do!
It was the first thing taught to me after I got my licence.
You have good people around you. : )
I've literally switched a transmission out while parked on the street.
Talent right here.
Desperate, I needed to get to work. I was 19 and on my own with no help from anyone.
Ah, gotcha. Good man. Many others would have shrugged responsibility.
