The ancient name for the continent from North to some of Central America is Turtle Island. Indigenous cultures had detailed maps on their territories around the continent and named it for its resemblance to a giant turtle, and it has ties to many pre-colonial creation myths.

So if you're looking for the pre-colonial name, that's the one. Not an alternative; the actual, original Indigenous name.

The name is derived from "Americus", the Latin form of Amerigo, after Mr. Vespucci, a guy who, at the time, never offered any actual EVIDENCE that he'd left Italy.

It's named after a guy who (apparently; more truth came out later) made up a story about going there and finding it, like Laputa or Brazil; it has nothing whatsoever to do with colonialism.

I got other examples. Britten which of course we call the U. K now comes form the old Roman world Britannia colonized by the Roman’s in the 3rd century BC

China comes form the Qin dynasty translated into Pakistani traveling the Silk Road

What about Russia? All countries have there names based in colonization the exceptions are more modern new countries like Kosovo which broke off from Serbia in 2008 (Serbia still refuses to recognize the country of Kosovo)
