Councils stopped mowing along roads and left fields alone. The idea was to let wild plants flower to help insects and wildlife.
So did you take part?
I've never heard of it. Sounds like a great idea.
I live on acreage and have pretty gardens around out house but no lawns.
Grasses start growing in the late winter when we get rain, and it keeps growing in the spring. That time of year, our countryside is green.
In spring, there are large patches of lupins, California poppies, but there are many other wild flowers, too. Some wild plants are low growing and have tiny but pretty flowers.
We wait until the grasses turn golden and the wild flowers go to seed in early summer after the rains have ended. Then is time for our once a year chore of weed whacking the tall grass around our house, along our 1/2 mile long driveway and the front of our property along the road. That's usually around the end of May and beginning of June.
After the grasses have been trimmed there is no need to do it again until the next year.
Birds, bugs and animals thrive in the natural habitat that has never been altered by humans. They explore our gardens, too. I love the diversity. We have to protect against deer. Voles and ground squirrels can be a problem at times. Birds thrive on seeds and insects. I love providing flowering bushes for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
So we have a "mow May", but the rest of the year we only have to weed our gardens.
My house is near thousands of acres of open space and dairy farms, so not mowing my very small lawn (10'x30') isn't going to make any difference. What does make a difference is the small stand of coast redwood trees in the backyard, which provides habitats for a number of wildlife species that have a much harder time finding a familiar habitat.
We now have owls, blue and stellar jays, red-winged blackbirds, squirrels, finches, raccoons, and a number of other creatures that are common to redwood forests that have found my stand of trees and stop by on their travels.
None of the above, really. We have gardeners contracted to mow the lawns in the complex. Shame, as there are loads of self-sown flowers growing round the edges.

Good that no one mowed the stones.
We didn't have that in the US, though we probably should have. Most grass was mowed too low so that, with the high temperatures and lack of rainfall, most grass is now brown, dormant or dying.
My garden is quite wild due to laziness but it really does make a huge difference to the wildlife.
Birds are very active in my garden and seem to particularly like the cover on the border, I think they may even have a nest in there.
I injured my right shoulder at work about a month ago, and consequently pull starting my lawnmower is next to impossible right now. As a result I've involuntarily participated for the month of June. Luckily my lawn is mostly micro clover and creeping charlie that stays pretty short so it doesn't look entirely unkept.
Yes also took part in Thatch Thursday.
It’s amazing what you find nesting there.
England is just a socialist state now. They tell you when you can stand or sit, mow grass and can't. What you can and can't say. How you can dress. I can't believe anyone with a mind or self respect could stay in that country.
are you high? theyve had an outrageously right wing government for 12 years now, additionally NONE of what you said is true, none of it. What is true however is that it is rapidly becoming a country of thoughtless drones running on auto-pilot, defending the authoritarian rulers and turning their back on any socialist principles, the healthcare system is slowly being taken away, social care and welfare is decreasing at a rate that would be alarming to most.
Socialism is the dispersal of socially gathered funds, taxes, the conservatives have collected funds socially and distributed them amongst their hyper rich friends, if thats how you imagine socialism you might be correct, if you have some notion that its a nation of people wearing communist looking hats, Lennin moustaches (even the women and children) waving red flags and talking about solidarity, you literally could not be further from reality.
it takes a very deep understanding of British politics to appreciate that the conservatives have cultivated this warm-fuzzy image to appeal to the working people but the reality is much more stark, the right in the UK are as far right as the right in the USA, they are just very, VERY good at disguising it.
If you were to study British political history (i would NEVER wish this on anyone mind you) the "privileges" afforded to the working people have all come from the left and have all been opposed by the right, some of whom are direct ancestors of the people currently in power. If the right didn't need to parry the favour of the working class (this term holds subtle differences to the USA and UK) they wouldn't even attempt to do their smoke show. if it were down to the right, the working people would still not be permitted to own their own property or vote.
y'all ain't gonna bring back John Lennon no matter what you do, but I'm sure the other Beatles appreciate it.
