What would you do, if tomorrow it was announced that women between the ages of 18, and 25 must register for the selective service just like men do?

Failing to register will land you a felony charge, a 25k fine, and immediate loss of access to things like financial aid for college, and the loss of the right to vote.. Just like men who fail to register have to deal with?

What would you do? No I'm not saying this will happen. Nor am I suggesting it should. I want to know honestly what would you do. It's equality as far as I'm concerned. I think we should abolished the draft/selective service personally for both before we expand it to women.

Interestingly a congressional committe with 7 democrats and 4 republicans was established to look in to this very thing a few years ago. The vote was 7-4 in favor of requiring women to register for the draft all the republicans voted no because some of their messaging requires men to feel victimized by registering for the draft when women dont have to.

But then some federal judge ruled that no one should have to register for the draft, I think, so the committee's recommendation was rendered moot.

Well, people tend to think that if you join the military there is heroism or bravery involved. I was in the military and it was just a normal job with longer hours and a really dumb dress code. Even if we vaguely made an exception for combat roles (enemy savages gonna rape.. before our own upstanding soldiers get the chance?), there's no reason women can't contribute to the ~95% of the work that isn't combat. So, if there is to be a draft at all it makes sense to include women.

I would register, but I also would never be able to actually serve. I'm legally blind, I have severe asthma, and I'm severely anemic. That alone would make me exempt.

I also have back problems due to scoliosis, and no upper body strength due to scoliosis bracing, and my body doesn't process nutrients correctly, which makes it nearly impossible for me to gain weight. Plus I twist my ankles constantly. I would never pass basic training.

I would never be able to actually serve. But I'm pretty sure that I'd still have to register. Disabled men are still required to register, just to have a record of it. And then if they were to get called on, then the medical exemption would kick in. So I assume it would be the same way for me.

Personally, I believe that we should abolish the draft in it's entirety. It's immoral to force someone to risk their life. But I would be safe either way. I'm useless to the army.

Given the government already has all our details why is registering even needed? Should war break out they can easily draft men or women should they want to.
If you're going to have a register you'd be better off putting on civilians with specific skills regardless of sex rather than just everyone

Feel relieved. It's an unfortunate reality that we'll never see the SS abolished until women face the same risk. I WISH it didn't have to be that way; that respecting personal rights was the default, but that's not the case, and wishing won't make it so. Fred Upton, who holds the dubious distinction of being my least favorite member of Congress, now that Thurmond and Helms are gone, TRIED (and boy, did it feel weird to be rooting for him), even getting bipartisan support- but it died before getting any momentum.

I'm old enough that I'm safe from the threat of battle slavery, but there are men I care about for whom that's not the case. Giving men an empathetic response requires defying instinct, but it's a basic moral requirement anyway. Few people are willing.

Makes me feel like you’re considered “old” after 25. Either way, I highly support women in the military. But to be an infantryman, or in any combat MOS, I do not feel the standards should be lower for women. The requirements of combat don’t care for your gender. Keep up with the men, or don’t fight.
