I'm in the US Armed Forced, and the monitoring of our BMI is an important personal endeavor and organizational responsibility here. We're tracked and counseled on our progress every couple of months to make sure we make the standards set out by the Governing Authority. We participate in the measuring of leg, waist and neck width against height and weight and educated on their significance respective to the Body Mass Index Scale. So yes, I do have a clue about what I'm talking about. Now, why should I listen to you? What do you understand that I don't?

BMI is not quote 'a very accurate guide', if you take the BMI of a body builder it will indicate that that person is overweight for their height. It is, absolutely not a measure of health, it is a general guide and tool which CAN ONLY be used when other information is considered.

Fair enough, I messed up there. But I do believe that her situation puts her in a bad position. With her amount of body fat, and her height and weight, she would be still be subject to a number of ailments and diseases much less prevalent in more healthy body types.

I made reference to my education in the BMI Scale only to impart a basic understanding that I knew what I was talking about. It wasn't made to demonstrate my complete understanding. And this was irrespective of that Woman's situation or where she would place within the confines of what is considered Standard; I wasn't considering her here.
But no, that woman, with the large amount of body fat she harbors, would be considered "overweight" and unhealthy by civilian standards. At least in the Army, if it's judged that a person is overweight due to fat content stemming from visual inspection, then that person is sent to a health station to perform thigh, waist, and neck measurements. Males only have neck and waist measurements performed while Females are subject to all three. For females, if two out of three of those Standards isn't met, then that person is flagged and labeled overweight or underweight. This woman would NOT pass just based off of thigh or waist width, regardless of her 1.7 Metre height or 75 KG weight. I knew two women who were discharged due to consistently failing to satisfy the Standards. Bodybuilders would pass based off of visual inspection even if they were overweight according to the BMI Scale. The US Army BMI Standards are the same as those of the civilian world; they aren't more stringent, we just demand that you remain within them.

I already went over the Bodybuilder case above. He would be waived. But all in all, controlling for age, muscle mass, bone density, and biological sex and race differences, the BMI scale is still an accurate and general indicator of body fat percentage, and a higher than average body fat percentage is attributed to a number of diseases, especially at this woman's rate. How can you say that this woman's state is healthy or that she isn't less susceptible to a number of cardiovascular diseases or to myocardial infarction or that she isn't subject to a shorter life expectancy? The BMI may be imperfect, but it's still strongly correlated with your risk of developing health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
