It's impossible that you, Asker, do not know Europe is to this day full of USA military bases, a part of which hosts USA atom bombs and, obviously, the means for their deliver.

There is also the fact that like all the West (maybe all the world) Europe worships money as their God. Which gives that USA and UK centered entity called "The Markets" a huge power over it.
When an economics minister in a government doesn't obey, "The Markets" get upset about it and the economic (financial) pressure on that country is upped. And upped. And upped. Until the disobedience by the minister, or the minister himself, are removed and substituted with obedience and someone obedient.

Of course this would have a chance to start changing if EU countries were brotherly to one another and there was an European union in the mind and hearts, as opposed to only on paper and bureaucratic bodies. No hope for that is in sight.
