Are the fires of cancel culture, perpetuated predominantly by the left-side of politics, finally starting to extinguish?

t is hard to say, but there is at least some indication that the culture is gradually moving away from "wokeism" and the like. It being noted that the nation has been here before.

If anything, the current culture is evocative of the 1960s and 1970s, albeit with a twist, more about which anon. The 60s and 70s was the era of hippies, race riots, "do your own thing," assassinations and the like and was, an outgrowth, paradoxically, of the 1950s. That decade had been a time of relative - it is always relative - stability, peace and prosperity. The generation that came home from two world wars, two economic depressions and a pandemic was ready for a period of calm and stability and that is what the 50s were.

However, the generation born in that stability came to take it for granted. What had seemed normal and safe to generations that had survived the mayhem of the 1917 to 1953 era, was interpreted by those who lived in the safety and comfort that followed as stultifying, conformist and dull.

Thus came the "swinging 60s" and the 1970s. An era of social and cultural turmoil. Suddenly liberation and "do your own thing" and the free speech movement became dominant. Then, in due course, the tumult of the age gradually exhausted society and thus the relative stability of the 80s and 90s followed. The generation raised in that stability again taking it for granted and thus the current age of renewed tumult.

Interestingly, this is in contrast to the current era in one respect. The message of the 1960s and 70s was "fight the man!!" The message now is "do and say what the man tells you is right."

There are two reasons for this. First, the technology of the 1917 to 1979 era was a homogenizing force. Movies - including newsreels, radio and television were mass media that forced, more or less, mass audiences to see the world through the same prism. Beginning in about the 1980s, however, talk radio, the personal computer, the Internet and the like had a splintering effect. Everyone could seek out their own media and get their biases reinforced.

To add to this, the generation that protested on the college campuses and rioted in the cities grew up. They now run major corporations, media, academia and high political and cultural offices. Thus where before the generation sought rebellion against the establishment, they are now the establishment and thus "wokeism."

It is the same ethic of the 1960s - "peace, love and dove" so to speak. However, whereas before that ethic was an ethic of rebellion, it is now the ethos of the generation in authority. Further, the old technology was something to rebel against. Now the rebellion is the fear that people will not conform to the old 60s ethic because media divides.

Bottom line, this pattern comes and goes - and will again. However, at the moment, the technology mitigates against "wokeism." That and the general instability in the society is leading to a sort of cultural exhaustion. That exhaustion may lead, after a time, to a period of relative stability and that stability will, given the technology, undermine "wokeism" and the like.

It is hard to put a timetable on all this, but it seems safe to say that the nation - and the world - will experience the cycle again, Suffice to add that the current increase in resistance to "wokeism" is likely a harbinger of things to come.

Pretty much. Cancel Culture, by the way, was completely orchestrated by corporations and the media to control people in society. It's NEVER just regular people getting mad at stuff.

When regular people get mad, such as with Netflix showing softcore child p**n in "Cuties" two years ago, corporations don't care. But whenever it's "Cancel Culture," it's always a few nobodies on Twitter, being directed by corporate interests, to cancel someone for some innocuous bullsh*t that no one in real life cares about. Notice how the mainstream media always picks up these stories immediately as well, when they nor anyone else, should even care about this crap. It's because they're in on it, too.

Gina Carano spilled the beans on this a year and a half ago after getting "fired" from The Mandalorian. It was Kathleen Kennedy's goons that orchestrated the whole Cancel Culture brigade against her.

They tried to "cancel" Gina Carano for speaking the truth.

Cancel Culture is entirely lead by psychopaths in the corporate world, using losers on Twitter as their personal army, to go after people no one else cares about. Like Chris Pratt for not supporting Joe Biden, or Dave Chappelle for not kissing the bleached asshole of the trans community.

But regular normal people have had enough of it, and lots of those powerful people who used it, such as Bob Iger and Kathleen Kennedy, are on their way out the door. THAT is why Cancel Culture is on its way out; not just because people won't tolerate the sh*ttiest scumbags on the planet trying to morally judge others, but because the scumbags behind it are started to get fired by the shareholders and investors.

I'm not sure, but I certainly hope so. No one should ever be "cancelled" for simply expressing a view that isn't trendy or popular!

It seems that cancel culture is as strong as ever, but the countervailing forces are also getting stronger.

I think so. Honestly, I think it is something that got started with good intentions and blew up into something it wasn't intended to be. And people in general are catching on to it and are feed up with it.

Its like in youth sports, its okay to cheer for your team, but its not okay to put down or insult the players or opposing team. You know keep it positive.

But then at the same time you can become so overly positive that its obnoxious and everyone around you knows your not really cheering for the team, as much as you are being overly critical of the the other team. Over time people start to pull way from you, because they don't want to be associated with the "Toxic Positivity" anymore.

They can not really say you're wrong, but at the same time they don't agree with what you're really doing. And if you don't recognize that and stop it, then people start to feel like they really have to choose a side when then they otherwise would not of chose the side they eventually felt compelled to choose.

I think that makes sense if you think about it.

Hasn't the right been guilty of cancel culture since the start of time? Wasn't denying women and marginalised communities, voting rights, a form of cancel culture?

Honestly, I try to stay impartial as I haven't a Dog in the fight, but it's really tough listening to right wingers make arguments for issues that they are the direct cause of. It's strange to me when a man complains about the plumbing system in his house, when he's the plumber that installed it!

I hope so, but probably not. It’s not like people are dissuaded by their own hypocrisy anymore. Recall how the far left was screaming, hashtagging and waving signs that read “believe all women” for months? Do you also remember when it stopped? As soon as women started coming forward with allegations against Joe Biden. One of whom was a child when he molested her. Those hypocrites are so sick, they ignored the sexual assault of a young girl and six other women at the height of MeToo, because the monster has a ‘D’ next to his name. If anything they do ever surprises you, you haven’t been paying attention.

I think it's taken time for the general population to recognise the patterns and trends associated with this insidious recent trend.

As they become aware of it in their work place, media, their kids schools, politics and elsewhere they can draw their conclusions.

I'm not sure the one Twitter voice to rule them all works for most people, and their own voices are becoming louder as a result.
