It's yet another reason that all the companies doing genetic testing handing that information over to the government is idiotic. But I consider it a relatively minor risk. Why? Because the efficient way to handle it isn't with US- it's with our food crops.

Consider golden rice- a strain of the rice plant that produces much larger amounts of beta carotene (precursor to vitamin A) than regular rice, and which has been genetically engineered to produce even more. Now, vitamin A deprivation isn't usually a problem in the first world, but sub-Saharan Africa and parts of south Asia are ravaged by it, and the Rockefeller foundation, which created the stuff, points out that hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved every year by allowing it to be sold, planted, and grown. In addition to lives being saved, you'd also see a HUGE reduction in related health problems. Canada and the US approved it in 2018, the Phillipines a year or two later. It sounds dandy- but massed growing of a single strain of food leaves it VERY vulnerable to genetic attack (this is, naturally, in addition to all the other dangers of genetically engineering food, which is a bigger issue than I can get into here).

You say "our enemies". Who are our enemies, in this case? The Russian and Chinese governments? Maybe- but government tyranny is only one form. Monsanto ALREADY has the rights to the genes of many of the crops we grow, and what happens if those genes get sequenced and we see massive crop death due to corporate sabotage? And then Bayer comes along and offers to supply everyone with THEIR strain (I don't think they actually make plants, but they're pretty damn evil, so I wouldn't be surprised), which is immune to the current blight. You could wind up with a market monopoly that'd dwarf Microsoft and Luxottica, and even put YKK to shame- NOBODY will legally move against you if the alternative is "everyone starves".

The creepiest possibility, however, is even nastier. Remember last June, when TJU released that study showing polymerase theta's highly efficient reverse transcriptase function? The one that demonstrated that "it's just a virus thing" was absolute nonsense, and that the ability existed in every mammalian cell? Yeah. Get enough market share, and you wouldn't even NEED a target population's genetic data- you could engineer food crops to release mutagenic agents and MODIFY their genes to whatever bioweapons you *already had*, genetically engineering the population without them even KNOWING.

what about all wheat type crops in the US coded into a bio weapon

All cattle and other agriculture and farming.

One of the big problems with genome weapons is any side using them would need to accept losing members of its own population. For example the Russians targeting Europe would see a large amount of their own population vulnerable.

Also the amount of effort versus just using smallpox or plague or a nuke.

The other thing with these types of weapon is Mother Nature who will have her own dice to roll.

You mean like an experimental mRNA vaccine that has a reverse transcriptase coded in it which inserts a spike protein gene into your DNA so that it permanently produces foreign antigens on your cell surface which provoke your own immune system to attack and destroy your cells? One that if it ends up in the liver it causes hepatitis... One that if it ends up in the heart, it causes myocarditis... One that if it ends up in the central nervous system it causes demylating diseseases that impair the signaling of the nervous system causing uncontrollable twiitching, loss of smell, brain fog, etc. One that if it ends up in the reproductive system leads to irregular periods, miscarages, etc. But how and the world would you deliver such a payload? It's not like people would just take it willingly and sign all their rights away on a piece of paper if you told them they couldn't go on vacation until they got it... It's not like people would take it for a free slice of pizza or a bag or fries... It's not like people would take it if you made up illegal mandates that said they needed it to work... People aren't that stupid right? Wouldn't they just say no, say I have rights, I don't need your bribes, I'll see you in court...

That is why I never sent my DNA in to those companies like 23 and me that share data with China's government. China's government has investments in those companies and legally can have access to the data for anyone that was unaware.

When you go out to murder someone, you are murdering that genetic code as well. That you're doing it with a bullet instead of a bio agent is rather immaterial.
