I'm not giving my opinion here, but I'm asking this question because I was listening to a philosopher and he said this

This will be a quick, and uncharacteristically for me, short answer. However, given as I have worked for a several Members of the American House of Representatives as well as two United States Senators, I think I can fairly answer it.
In short, some politicians are uneducated and others not. However, much of what a politician does is in response to the moment and while they may view things through a historical prism, it is not that they are always in a position to take advantage of that knowledge. It is always a balancing act between the pressures of the hour and the broader historical perspective.
Also, many politicians have been trained in the law or are even lawyers. There is much to be said for that, but there is truth in the old axiom that "The study of the law sharpens the mind by narrowing it."
When a lawyer views a situation involving the law, he is apt to focus on the details and the minutia. This is both bad and good. On the one hand, he will tend to lose sight of the general goal. On the other hand, he well understands how the law had previously been read and how that had unintended consequences.
Long story short, some politicians - think Churchill and DeGualle as excellent examples - have a real sense of history and its meaning. Others are not unlike the people that they represent and are not all that aware. They just muddle through, so to speak, and are many times surprised that their goals have unintended effects that, had they known history, they might otherwise have foreseen.
@DCooper While I share your views and am sympathetic, the point, while humorous, is sloganeering, so I'll pass. As I say, some Members are very educated about history, others not. Which makes them not unlike the people who elected them.
I think honestly, speaking in particular for my country, today’s politicians are uneducated in general. They’re all a bunch of liars, ignorants, no common sense, no patriotic education… and obviously they have zero historic education. They commit the same errors done in the past! Think about Ucraine war, EU politicians committed a lot of errors that resemble the appeasement policy of Chamberlain before WW2. That and other things… in general I think political class lacks in everything, we had great politicians in the past that were full of faults but had foresight and patriotic spirit to make correct decisions in order to grant the Nation a good improvement, despite being them sometimes unpopular decisions… today’s politicians only want to satisfy lowest wishes of population only in order to be re-elected. So their foresight stops at the end of their mandate and their historic view stops at the previous government “that has all the fault for the actual situation”.
Politicians of the past were educated and wrote books about their political views, todays politicians do videos on TikTok or go on the beach parties, that’s the shameful difference. And their lack of education and common sense will be our ruin.
What happens here seems to be similar to the last periods of Roman Empire, with leadership only focused to its own pleasure and giving people “panem et circenses”, gladiators shows and free food in order to satisfy their basic and lowest wishes. That’s the direction we’re going to, and all of us know how went.
I can’t say all of them are uneducated about history, because I don’t know it for a fact. However, I do believe most of them are, or at least the ones I follow.
Also, even if they are educated about history. That’s not necessarily a good thing. Politics is a dirt game, and politicians will always use whatever is at their disposal for getting votes. Would I want them to use their knowledge on sensitive topics such as genocides, slavery, whatever to simply swindle voters? Absolutely not.
Former prime minister of my country once said "Let's recall old days, when humans were hunting dinosaurs. If they hit him once with a stone - that would do nothing. But if they were hitting him like this a lot of times - they would kill him and have meat"
I would say most of the most powerful politicians don’t care much for their culture, the history of their culture, or the preservation of their culture.
Not just politicians. Although many are educated and pretty smart, they tend to do whatever they can to remain in office - regardless of whether its right or wrong.
