Why are older generations obsessed with politics?

I can't have a discussion with my parents or in laws without it spiraling into some political rant. Is this all they care about?

THEM: You guys said you went on vacation last month? Where?
ME: Yes, we did. We spent two days at Disneyland and a day at sea world. The kids loved it. Bought some legit looking lightsabers for them in Tomorrowland. Our favorite ride was the...
THEM: What are you, some woke homo liberals? You must like donating your time and money to the democrat party.
ME: (Turns to my wife) Well that went downhill fast.
THEM: I don't understand why you guys have not been visiting as often. Family should be first.

It's not a generational thing, but I would say the reasons they are political can be different than someone my age. Think about it:

- The world used to be very different in how politics used to be, people viewed their country, and the world overall interacted with each other due to moderately different beliefs back then.

- Older generations have lived longer, so they have families to care about (politics do effect your children/grandchildren) and just experienced more of how different types of government officials are in office.

- They have a duty to help guide younger family members, which is good. It doesn't mean they always do it the right way or have the best beliefs, but the intent is usually good.

It is also possible they are just very passionate about politics and want to vent, as they take it personally, which is what a lot of people do.

Sounds like the neighborhood where I live. I am a bit on the younger side for my neighborhood. Half the time when you strike up a conversation with someone, they put some twist on the conversation that has some far-right twist to it. It is to the point where I almost regret moving here.

That’s not politics, that’s politicizing (attributing political metrics to unpolitical things/events). A result of the two party system and massive societal divide.

I find that as I get older I pay more attention to what id going on with the government. Maybe because I pay way too much in taxes.
