Why do democrats & republicans deflect in political arguments or conversations?

Depends, people usually deflect because they encountered new information they need to process, it sort becomes a way to "buy time", or because they are full of bullshit, or because they want to segway the conversation into one they want to have.

To many of them are conditioned to lie or at least spin.
