Are people who commit suicide cowards?

There are many gay activists that commit suicide, there are men and women who commit suicide because they broke up with someone or they commit suicide in jail, because their family hates them, etc. But I just don't get it. Why not take your chances and try to escape from jail or kill the people who wronged you instead of killing yourself? After all, there is a chance you might survive, and if you don't, well you were ready to die anyways.

Humans are wired to wanting to live. People who commit suicide find themselves at a point where they aren't able to see a way out. Killing yourself is not easy but at some point it seems to be the only way for people to escape the pain they go through as well as they might think they put others through. Every situation is very different of course and reasons people commit suicide are complicated.

If they're depressed their brain chemistry can change, making them unable to see another solution and their perception of reality might be heavily distorted.

Some people go hellish situations and might not be able to get out of them on themselves and don't have access to outside help. I've heard too often about domestic abuse being straight up ignored by people around the abuser, including authorities.

Some might have a terminal illness or be in constant physical pain, reducing their life quality to a point they see death as more pleasant than keeping on a battle they're bound to lose anyway.

There's also cases of usually fathers or single parents who were lone providers committing suicide (hiding them as accidents) after losing their jobs to feed their families with the insurance money.

Another thing is that mental health resources might be not available to everyone. Many people are overwhelmed with depressed close ones and not able to help them. Especially teens are often not taken seriously with their problems. It also does not help that asking for mental help and support is stigmatised in many places just as suffering from a mental condition in general.

@DaveJord If you have terminal cancer and are in pain most of the time how could taht be selfish. It would be more selfish of others to expect that person to stick around.

Incurable disease... mental health issues are curable if you have the strength and sense of commitment to do it. Killing yourself because your weak is not and excuse. It selfish because you are only hurting all the people that love you even more.

@DaveJord I know that, but it was what I am talking about. Committing suicide (because they don't have assisted suicide in your state for the terminally ill) is not cowardly. To me abortion is cowardly more than suicide if you are terminally ill. If you want to suffer in pain if you have terminal cancer that is your right. Not everyone wants to prolong their life when they know it is inevitable so why endure the pain and suffering?

I hear this question so many times and it baffles me that people can't comprehend this, but I chalk it up to different life experiences. Someone who is considering suicide is likely in the debilitating throes of depression. They aren't thinking RATIONALLY. This isn't a time when they're thinking about strategizing an escape plan from their current predicament. Expecting something rational from a person who is, at the moment, in an irrational state is itself irrational.

From experience, reminding someone about your opinion that the consideration of suicide is "selfish, cowardly, disgraceful" et al does all of zero things to pull them out of the mental crisis they are currently in and is posed from a position of ignorance rather than strength. Instead get them some psychiatric help. We even have legal processes in place to remove choice from the equation to get that person help because the vast majority of the time it is a passing crisis that can be addressed rather than taking the final choice. For me, it was a chemical imbalance in my brain that was totally treatable (my serotonin bottomed out and wasn't being produced in sufficient quantities).

Research before judgement. You may save someone's life.

Ahhhhhhh no. I would not call them cowards, because they have loved one they left behind and I would not want to insult anyone in pain from a family member that killed themselves. But takes courage to and real commitment to continue on. Dieing is the easy way out... takes no real commitment to do any of the things you talked about. Its one single act and its over for you. The brave keep living and fighting on.

That depends on what they did: people like the Nazis, Jim Jones, or Jeffrey Epstein: oh yeah! They knew that the fecal matter was about to hit the fan.
However, people like the Heaven's Gate cult: they were suckered into believing the lies of people like Marshall Applewhite.
There's also evidence of jumpers from the Golden Gate Bridge who have survived the jump regretting ever letting it get to that point; even the Golden Gate Bridge now has phones with direct lines to suicide prevention hotlines to convince jumpers NOT to go through with it.

To the suicidal, yes. To them, taking themselves out will make the lives of everyone else better because they feel as if they are a burden on them.

To the outsider it absolutely looks like cowardice, but they need to learn view the situation from their eyes.
