Because a rational person would try to overcome obstacles. What you have to remember is that they have given up and see no way out of their situation. To a depressed individual the option of suicide is the least painful and puts an end to the seemingly never ending torment. Physiologist know that a nerve can be stimulated to the point of non function (messmerized). I would think that can occur to neurons associated with emotion.
