The USA agreed at the end of WW2 to embrace a "one China" policy. We are backing out of it, and dishonoring our previous commitments. This is why the world distrusts us.. we've flipped on treaties and screwed whole countries many times over.

We need to be better prepared for it than we are now because it won't be a proxy war, it will involve the US Navy, but Taiwan's semiconductor industry is too crucial to simply let the CCP take over the island violently.

In my opinion it’s only a matter of time until Taiwan falls. It just doesn’t make sense for the US to defend an island off the coast of China that is thousands of nautical miles away from our supply lines. If the Chinese actually did a proper amphibious landing supplemented with parachuting troops, they’d have the island. US troops couldn’t intervene or do airstrikes for fear of killing Taiwanese civilians who have been infiltrated by Chinese troops.

If we had any sense we would be getting the top Taiwanese scientists and semiconductor developers out of Taiwan while we can. We are doing that somewhat from what I understand, trying to build the industry in the US, but Taiwan itself is a lost cause and one that will only bleed America dry in its defense.

@Agagagagaga: I see the argument for doing it, but if they won‘ t leave Taiwan, we can’t let the industry be taken over without a fight. I don’t think the Taiwanese are willing to let their top industry go to the US (the brainpower is if the greatest importance, but given the amount of time needed to build the facilities to manufacture semis, there also needs to manufacturing capacity already in place).
