If China invades Taiwan should America come to the defense of Taiwan and get involved militarily to fight China, why, why not?

Hell no.
General Jack Keane said China would full stop DEFEAT the USA in a war in that arena. China isn't' that far behind the U. S. in overall technology, and their real economy is stronger than the U. S. AND China is actually ahead of the U. S. in both Rail Gun technology and hypersonic and stealth missile technologies... AND they out-number us nearly 5 to one, so in a war of attrition and infantry the way our dumb leaders fight wars, the Chinese would mop the floor with the USA.
China had disarmed their nukes several years ago, but because of the arms race renewed between Russia and the U. S., China rearmed their nukes and is even expanding their nuclear arsenal for the first time in decades. They're doing this because the USA keeps hypocritically researching more and more super-weapons and modernizing our ICBM arsenal, and we even tested another nuke (an older one) several years back. That scared the Chinese into producing more WMD than their own core beliefs supports. That had been living with a "Minimum deterrance" policy, but now they are switching to an "assured destruction" policy, and it's OUR fault for sticking our noses in everyone else's business all the time.
We are not in a position to win any kind of war with China. China has more than 4 times our population, the manufacturing base of the world, and more than a few nuclear weapons.
That means in a conventional conflict they can build ships, plains, drones, and missile faster than we can shoot them down. In a nuclear conflict we all just die.
If Taiwan is to be defended they need their own nuclear weapons and delivery system to hit and destroy china independently. Otherwise China has to credibility believe we will lend them ours. Joe Biden gave up that card with Afghanistan and the Ukraine.
they have to but they probably shouldn't because that would automatically mean ww3...

Unfortunately, I have to say no, as much as I admire what Taiwan has achieved and as much as I don't want to see them live under CCP corruption and oppression. Simulated war games show we would lose, which isn't that surprising considering the following:
1) The huge distance our supply lines would comprise
2) The CCP has trained, focused and planned pretty much solely for this particular war
3) Our weak leadership and currently relatively low morale in the ranks
4) Our weakened manufacturing base, which means we can't sustain combat against a peer competitor, especially one to which we have offshored so much production
5) Our Navy is smaller than it needs to be for such a conflict
6) Taiwan means everything to the CCP, whereas it's only peripherally important to us
We shouldn't get involved at all. The same can be said about Ukrainian. The Vietnam war, the war in Iraq and 9/11 itself are great examples of why we need to stop attempting to police the world and stop trying to be the worlds superman. Also the simple fact that many people who support us getting involved won't enlist and fight in the conflicts they say we should involve ourselves in. Because like many other issues these people won't put their money where their mouth is.
The most the US might do would be to impose sanctions... provide military hardware to Taiwan... same as with Russia, US will not want open conflict with one of the larger more influential countries in the world.
I would be supportive of sanctions and military aid.. sure.
While it's NOT a member of nato. It is considered a ally of ours. According to section 644 of the foreign assistance act of 1961. "Taiwan will be treated as though it were designated a major NON-Nato ally". In short protecting Taiwan is in our interest. But war is costly to all. China invading Taiwan is a worst case scenario. Every diplomatic solution should be exhausted through the United Nations to solve it peacefully. But if that fails it should be treated as a world problem. The United States should seek Nato support in repelling China. One would hope that cooler heads would prevail. You have to consider the role Taiwan plays both militarily and economically.
Nah, we should shut up and stay in our lane.
#1 This isn't a Captain America's movie, we'll get our asses handed to ourselves by China. Period. If you don't think so, tell me how the US military performed against the Taliban in Afghanistan. And them compare the Taliban to the Chinese army in power.
#2 Taiwan is none of our business.
Best thing the US could do is what we are doing in Ukraine supplying them with huge stock piles of modern equipment. The Chinese military equipment is based largely on Russian designs and look how well the Russians are doing with said equipment in Ukraine
We really should be building computer chip factories in the US with American innovation making them more efficient that the ones in Taiwan. We would have enought for American businesses and sell the overflow to our allies. The Chinese can have Taiwan and they can shove their own chips where the sun don't shine.
@msc545 The US still is the world leader in innovative manufacturing. Intel used to make most of it's chips here. These shortsighted companies moved their manufacturing to china and Taiwan because of slave labor. When the iPhone was first developed it had a plastic screen Steve Jobs thought it looked chintzy and wanted a glass screen. He went to Corning Glass to see if they would make the screens. They wanted to do it and said they would build a factory with lasers that will precision cut the screens. It sounded good until they told Steve Jobs it would take a year to build the plant. Steve Jobs was able to buy the sheets of glass from Corning and ship them to China and they had people sit with a glass cutter and do it by hand.
If a good friend of mine calls for my help, I'll be there.
I loathe the idea of ''war'' - but I'd not be afraid to protect my home... and that of my friends.
What the U. S. should or should not do is out of my influence. But to show some bravery against a REAL enemy would certainly increase my respect.
I heard a lot of our computer parts like semi-conductors are made there.
We didn't help hong kong because they are worthless to US.
It don't think America can afford to lose Taiwan. We don't make stuff here and china control is too reaching.
Africa south America the middle east all basically cool with China
We would lose that fight tho. If this was 30 years ago we would have dogged them out
We're perfectly capable of making our own computer components. Most of the price of computer components at the Point of sale is Mark-up and pure profit for the company. The U. S. based computer component manufacturers, such as Intel, IBM, AMD, etc, they all operate 50% to 100% profit margins with CEOs who make hundreds of millions per year, and they make their components right here in the U. S. with high wages and all.
That whole "we rely on Taiwan" thing is s a myth. We only rely on them because of failed Globalizations policies, whereby we attempt to "Democratize" nations that don't even want Democracy through outsourcing our consumer products demands. Again, we could just make twice as many computer components right here in the USA, and it wouldn't be a problem. We have plenty Silicon, Copper, and Gold to go around right here in the USA.
Interesting so they hold no value to US? Why protect them then? Do we a have a military base over there?
we should , but can't. If we do, empty shelves in stores worse than before and no medicine for people.
I do believe China will invade Taiwan before year is over now.
China is trying to starve them out now. I believe China will stop their exports to other countries and that means no chips for US.
Yes we should if we don’t get involved no foreign country should ever trust in United States ever again we betray our allies constantly I don’t know why we wouldn’t betray Taiwan but when we do America‘s reputation should be going in the toilet and frankly no one should dress as ever again or even trade with us or talk to us
America will never fight for Taiwan against China, AMERICA doesn't like to engage directly in the war, it will support by material and money, as supporting Ukraine. China cannot occopy Taiwan by force, Taiwan, a sovereign country with UNO membership
No. America already formally recognizes Taiwan as part of China. Intervening would be playing a game of nuclear chicken.
Ever since the 1970’s if I recall correctly.
@Sixgunsound correct.
If they have a defense treaty, they will.
Otherwise, US will supply materials and information.
My bias opinion is US should not intervene, because I am fucking near Taiwan and I do not want war here. Fucking China.
It is not going to happen. USA will do nothing.
Yes, we should.
We have Hunter Killer subs in the Taiwan Strait already. There will be no land invasion after the 2022 and 2024 elections. We will drown the bastards. Until Biden dies (soon, I hope), Taiwan is at risk.
Same as ukr, Taiwan would make ukr feel easy to invade.
China would need the world's help to succeed.
I don't think we have the strength to take on China in their back yard.
Also, we have a senile geeser and a cackling whore running the country. The world should not expect much from us.
At the very least we should stop trading with China and economically isolate them from the world
The plan is already in place.
Has been for years.
